what should my timing be set at? my buddy says older chevy's should be set at 10 after, the manual says it should be set at 4, it doesn't say before or after, and i've read here that with TBI it should be set at 0...

what shold i be running my timing at???

i have a holley projection 4 on my gm performance crate 350 that is supposed to have 290 hp

also the holley manual says that the TPS should have .63 volts when at idle, but if i have it set at that it won't run, it won't even start, now i have it set between .80 and .90 and it actually runs, just overheats b/c i think it's still running lean

time it by feel, watch it as it idles and adjust for the shakes. it should run real smooth and barely feel it in the cab. richen the mix at this time too if you think its too lean. ive only timed carbs but it should be the same.

i did mine this way and at stoplights you can barely tell its on. well besides the exhaust, you cant feel it.

tried doing the timing on mine this weekend and its still running a little rough

Unless someone knows what Holley recommends for your setup, I'd call them.

Stock GM EFI is 0* with the bypass wire disconnected, but 20*+ at idle with the wire connected.

Might be why your TPS needs to be "wrong" to run correctly.

I have the 290... I have nothing good to say about it. The cam makes it a horrendous truck engine.

Hmm... I'm carbed, but if I make my 290hp run right, half of the gas comes right back out the tailpipe. Lean it out and it runs like crap. Timing is way advanced on it to keep it running right...and it runs hotter than it's supposed to.

This is after consulting with Edelbrock for the carb, and no telling how much time spent on newsgroups and forums trying to figure it out.

Sorry if I'm not helping much, or bringing you down. But I hate that engine (and whoever decided to market it as a "performance engine") so much that I'd like to launch an anti-290 campaign.

Back on topic... I'd consult with Holley on this one, and make sure they understand what your cam specs are. They'd probably be the best ones to talk to about this.

Does your fuel injection setup have spark control or not? If it does, call Holley and ask them what to set it at (probably 0).

If it doesn't, what distributor are you running? Are you using the vacuum advance or not?
