Plugs are still in! I might be missing a few marbles but not that many yet! This is just one tough sob to and get off. But tomorrow is another day. One thing is I have been going kinda gentle as I have never had this problem before I didn't want to risk breaking the head. Also I have to be gentle on the yanking and pulling etc due to back injury. I guess going with the get a bigger hammer theory I could always pull out the 20lbs sledge

You mean an engine-hoist/crane. Got it.

Don't recommend the sledge hammer idea. They have a habit of causing damage. Get someone on the prybar while you crank engine.?

Thanks for all the tips guys! went to give it another shot today and stop being so gentle. About 5 good HARD whacks with the dead blow and it started to move so I just kept on until it was loose enough to pick it up. Thanks for all the tips and suggestions.

Thanks, I think the biggest part of the problem was not wanting to damage the head or mess up my back more by working too hard. There is a lot of crud in the cylinders carbon deposits, any tips on removing it. I thought of a vacuume cleaner but don't have a shop vac and can only imagine what the wife would say. She thinks I am nuts for working on an old truck already. "Honey what are you doing?" "Uh just vacuuming the engine babe doesn't everyone?" What about compressed air to blow it out? I have lots of the cans of keybord cleaner or a portable air tank I could get a blow gun tip for. Would something like that work well?

Yep. We're all gonna sleep easier tonight now that that head's popped off.

DON'T use any compressed air to blow carbon deposits. You'll just push the dirt down the sides of the pistons and cause no end of trouble.
Rotate engine 'til a piston is at TDC then you can scrape crud off. afterwards move piston down bore a bit and wipe any bits that stick to the cylinder walls with a rag. Repeat moving piston up and down to get all the bits out Tedious I know. Someone may have a better way maybe. Don't blow anything with air. Get an old/cheap vacuum is a good investment as u can use it in cab as well.

Thanks Kiwi thats actually what I started to do and thought there has to be a better way, but I guess I'll just go to it I can handle a little tedious work now and then
