I've got more details on the build here: https://ck5.com/forums/threads/1987-v20-suburban-350tbi-sm465.343372/

But the short is that I've got a 1987 stock V20 Suburban. Front leaves are inverted so I'm replacing them with new stock springs. Adding a zero rate at all 4 corners, and ORD HD front shackles. Current tires are 235/85r16 on 6.5" rims. Truck is my DD and will some light trail use and field driving while hunting and around the farm. I've got two tires/sizes in mind and in my mind I see the pros/cons of each but I'm not really sure which direction to head.

I'm looking at two different tires/sizes right now:
285/75r16 ProComp Sport A/Ts

or

255/85/r16 Toyo Open Country M/Ts

ProComps because price is good, quieter on road, 60k tread wear warranty, general good reviews with most saying they have a hard time in mud. Also recommended to get a wider wheel to meet manufacturer's specs but have seen plenty running this size on stock 6.5" wheels. Have slight concerns about the wider tire rubbing and I don't want to cut the body...its too clean for that.

Toyos because I like the tire and they seem to perform well offroad. I won't be doing any hard offroading or mudding but in the wet season, it rains like a motherfucker here. Just had a solid month of rain and don't fancy getting stuck out in my back acres with some A/Ts. Thats really my only reason for considering a M/T vs the A/Ts. Also thinking about this size just because its a little narrower and would fit my stock rim. The slightly higher prices offsets the cost of new rims.

What are y'alls thoughts on the sizes for this build as well as the different tire types for my intended use?

I run Toyo's in a 37". Super nice tire. They are made in the USA and are considered top of line these days. No chance a ProComp is going to out wear a Toyo, they are just a China tire with a name slapped on them.

I am partial to Toyo's as well. Sold a bunch of them in the past with nary an issue.

Pro Comp's are meh. I've had issues with them balancing and all that. They are not aggressive at all, either. The Toyo's will clear out pretty good.

Hows road noise on the Toyo MTs? The truck isn't exactly quiet as is but I do want to *try* to keep the noise down where possible

Imo comparing procomp to toyo is apples to oranges. They are not in the same category whatsoever. Toyo all day every day in every way.

the 255/85/16 is REAL skinny compared to the 285 size . i did run some bfg mud in the 255 size and it was a bit squirmy on the road on my k30 . i swapped to 265/75/16 and wow much better . the fatter foot print helps the road real . so unless you need the skinny go a little fatter than the 255 size .

also them 285 should be on a wider rim than 6" or they will be sucked in at the bead area / sidewall .

Pro comp a/t in 37x12.5x17
They balanced fine, road noise isn’t an issue. They do what I need them to. Not super aggressive tread, but I couldn’t afford that look. The A/T is good enough for me now.

I have 285 75 16s on a 6.5" stock wheel. on hard right turns the left rubs on pitman drag link end. No other rub issues, but I have 4" lift

I run the ProComps on my 01 Dodge Cummins. No complaints.
I run the Toyos on my 04 Jeep LJ. No complaints.

Cooper tire AT or STT. Made100% in the US. . Around same price as the above mentioned and wears great for a DD

I like the size 255/8516 on a 6.5 rim, had a few sets of Toyo M 55s on my old Duramax.

I have 285/7516s Toyo MTs on 6.5 steel wheels for my 77 K20.
But they are bald... I got them off a silage bunker! Lol! But they look cool... ish!
Just saying they fit good. Truck has about the same lift as your planning with your sub.

Ive got 285/75r16 patagonia mts on my 88 v20 they work great and are quiet. I have zero rates in the front on stock worn out springs

Currently running the stock 235/85r16 so the 255 would be a bit wider. And the Toyos are taller and wider than spec so its about an inch wider than stock. The "need" on the 255 is to not have to buy new rims and I was a little worried about the wider 285 rubbing. Not looking at the 265 currently as its the same height as my current tire, just a little wider.

For me, I had to get new wheels along with tires which was stupid expensive. The wheel size that came on the truck when I bought was 16.5 which made getting tires next to impossible unless you wanted mud boggers, which I did not want.

17” wheels are what was recommended by more than going to 16”....once the pro comps wear, I’ll probably go down to 35” tires but we’ll see

Yeah I don't want to waste money on rims. I don't really care what the rims look like. Thats why I'm leaning towards the 255 so I can keep it on stock wheels. I know I *could* run the 285 on stock wheels as its only a 1/2 inch off the tire data sheet but I don't want to mess up the tire or have my insurance deny a claim if something happened.

ProComp 285s are 203/ea plus 90-100 per rim. Toyo 255s are 268/ea.

If you have wheels you can still use, I’d stay with them. Unless you have the $ to replace them all.

i wasn’t in that position. Tires were dry-rot etc. So it became one of those things where it all had to be replaced or not drive the truck... Running mud boggers on the street was just not an option, for me.

good luck

I have them on my 3500 megacab cummins dodge also, love them. smooth ride, low noise, cheap price, and have been wearing pretty slowly.

Either of those tire sizes will be fine on a 6.5" wide wheel. I have 36x12.50x16.5" Swampers on 16.5"x6.5" wheels.

They wear just the same as when I ran the same size tires on 16.5"x9.75" wheels.
