Living in Arizona has me thinking it might be a wise purchase to get tires covers for my Blazer. The sun can be brutal and the amount of sun my truck is exposed to is sufficient enough for me to ask.

the drivers side gets all the morning sun, while the passenger side gets a lot of afternoon/setting sun.

since it’s not a daily and I don’t drive it very often in the summer, and my tires being brand new, would tire covers be wise investment?

they aren’t very expensive...

thoughts?

Covers stop the uv damage. They don't stop the exposure the the heat. Both of which can cause the tire to degrade, dryrot/cracking.

I'm not saying it's a waste of effort but given the heat you have down there I don't know if it's going to make a major difference.

My tires on my K5 are 4 years old and it sits outside every day. No covers. Higher elevation than you too. No major signs of dry rot or sidewall cracking.

I've thought about covers, but the amount I drive mine the tread will wear out before they crack or rot out from sun exposure.

I would probably put covers over the tires on mine if I didn't have to be concerned with the wind that we have had this year. OH, and wasps would probably love to build nests under the covers.
Sun and bird crap on the rubber probably is not helping longevity. But letting them sit unused is not good from what I have been told. Exercising the rubber keeps it more pliable is what I have heard. It doesn't crack as quickly if it gets "worked".

I just need more garage space, then I can just open the door, unplug the battery maintainer and go.

I think that rubber compounds have changed for the worse. I used to have lots of tires that looked fine but were past date. Now tires seem to crack much earlier. Last set of tires I put on my flatbed trailer were showing cracks at 2 years and just got replaced at 7yrs totally beyond shot, probably should have changed them a couple years back. Only use the trailer occasionally.

Tire covers probably help and a healthy dose of armor all regularly seems to help too.

It’s just for the summer months. I ordered a set from amazon 36”-39” covers with UV protection. They were $32.

I mean it can’t hurt. Gives me something to do while the truck warms up. Though, that warm up time is significantly shorter in the summer....

i was swapping my U bolts this morning to new ones and leaning on that sun facing rear tire got me thinking.
that my tires are cooking in the summer for hours and hours.

Brands of tires seems to have bearing on cracking/dry rotting. Most often around here I seen 2yr old or less Michelin tires have cracks on the sidewalls and in the tread voids.

I grew up in Az, I had a set of 315/75/16 on my Blazer for 3-4 years. Had 70-80% tread on left and no damage. One summer when it reached 120+ degrees multiple days in a row.

The spare tire inside exploded and one of the tires that got direct high noon sun exploded . Blazer was just parked in the driveway.

Tires were aired up to 37ish PSI. The tire in direct the sun would burn you if you touched it.

That rubber was probably 200+ degree. But not 200+ distribute over the tire evenly. Hot part got weak and bubbled. Then boom!

These tires are new and that’s what I’m trying to prevent. Premature tire death from the heat. One side gets rising sun the other gets setting. So maybe these covers will help a bit, they can’t hurt
