well I’m in the planning phase for my 82 blazer and I’m stuck on tire choices, going with a 4 inch lift 383 TH350 it has the 208 but I talked the wife in to a 4 speed atlas :thumb: I’m eyeing the 2.72 / 3.8 option

I plan to start with 37" and have narrowed my choices to

1 Goodyear MTR
2 Swamper SSR
3 BGF KM2

I live in Idaho and plan to run the Rubicon and Moab we make trips to Oregon as well so a well rounded off road tire is a must, i can deal with some on road quarks up to tire rumble and noise as long as we can talk or use the radio to drown it out at hiway speed.

This will be a DD / weekend wheeler camping rig, I had the BFGs on my zuk and my friends had them on their jeeps and I was not impressed with their mud traction. What is the opinion on these 3?

If you are going to run a 37" tire, I would try to find some of the BFG Hummer take offs.

I've seen several sets of both the new MT/R's and BFG MT's on the trail with our club. The BFG's are good all-around tires with good street manners and wear, and okay off-road traction. I have ran them in the past on the street and trail and know a guy with a YJ on D60's and 37" BFG Muds who drives it on the road regularly. The new MT/R's w/ Kevlar seem to do a little better off-road in the mud and slippery conditions, but not worlds better. Don't have a lot of feedback from people running them on the road but it sounds like they do okay. A few years ago there was a guy in our club for a short time with the SSR's, the only ones I have ever personally seen in action. They seemed to do pretty good in slimy/muddy conditions. He did drive the Jeep daily but not sure what his thoughts were on them.

I know this comment is off topic, but not sure if I would spend the money on an Atlas 4-speed. A guy in our club bought one years ago and he never uses anything but the 3.8 range. The 2.72 and 3.8 range are close enough together where he never finds a reason to jockey between them, and the 10:1 is just too low for any practical purpose. He could have saved a chunk of money and just bought a 3.8 version.

if that is the case then ill do the 2.72 / 4.3 and i wont have to dubble down one gear for rocks and the other for hills sand and mud :haha:

the the other option is 2.72/ 3.0 then i can dubble down when needed
i will probably use the 3.0 the most.

im aware of the ORD dubbler options but i havent had any luck finding a 205 localy in the pick and pul :dunno:

Out of what you listed I'd go with the MT/R's. Buddy just got rid of his KM2's, they ended up chunking pretty bad in the rocks and weren't his fav off road. Personally I like the BFG Krawlers but they're pricey for a dd

I have km2s on my blazer I havent off roaded yet but on the road there awesome. My buddy had the mtr's on his bronco and they were junk he warrantied them a few times they kept chopping the tread it was weird. They did good off road though.

I've run the BFG's and the MT/R's and loved them both.

Personally, I'd be picking one of those rather than the SSR's.

I have a set of the military take off BFG Baja T/A's, the 37" variety, on my tow rig and I like them but I don't think they're as good offroad as the KM2's or MT/R's and the 16.5" wheel isn't as good offroad.

I would pick the goodyears in that list.

I have had SSRs and like them pretty good but they were on a lightweight rig so you can't really make much of a comparison.

All 3 are good tires.

I just had nearly the same decision to make on my '89 YJ & chose the Kevlar MTR's. :waytogo:

Wanted a tire that cleaned easily in the mud, gripped rocks like a nympho with daddy issues, worked well in the snow, were priced as cheaply as possible, AND ran "smooth" down the road.

Left Swampers out cause of the road & price, left the new style BFG's out cause of the mud, AND the MTR's had the most tread to start with of the radial tires I was considering. After HOURS of research I purchased 4) 35x12.50x15 Kevlar MTR's from 4 wheel parts.com for $1039 shipped to my door (special $49 shipping offer along with cc5off discount code)

That all said I haven't ran them anywhere yet (refuse to drive it on salty roads unless I have a specific reason too), but I'm very excited to try them out!

Is there any reason you are not interested in the H1 takeoffs? A 37x12.50x16.5" tire for cheap?

thank you all for your input:waytogo:, i gess this just reinforces the need to go to a 17 inch wheel:whistle:

17" wheel will make all the difference. The shorter sidewall will add on road stability without taking away from off road ability.

When I was tire shopping my first choice was the ne MTRs. I like the tread pattern for the terrain I wheel plus, at the time, my truck was my DD and all those small tread blocks and siping would help in the snow packed roads. Problem was the size I needed were on back order from everywhere that had a reasonable price.

My 2nd choice was the KM2s and they were readily available at the time. Their tread pattern was proven to work well around here and only slightly less siped than the MTRs I felt would be fine on snow packed roads. Turns out they have held up great for DD and wheeling duties. Really quiet on the highway for an MT tread and they run smooth as glass upwards of 70+ mph. Aired down to 12psi they wrap around rocks and provide really good grip through the trails. I must have 10-12 k miles on them and hardly any tread wear at all. I have been very happy with the KM2s and would definitely buy again based on my experience.

the reason for the 17 over the 16.5 is a pipe deam that maby latter i will build some fabricated 9 in spider trax axles :haha:for it and i dont want to dubble my cost of rims.

On the other hand dulie D60 fronts are more comon around here, I just havent looked in to what i need to do to the SRW 14BFF to run the hummer rims. but im still working on the engine, trany and body right now havent moved to the axles yet

I agree with Brian (496truck). I love my KM2's. They're great on the road, ok in some muddy stuff, and really good when aired down in the dirt.

I have the 37" KM2s......they work great in snow.....not noisy on pavement. Haven't had the chance to do muddin yet.

So far a great tire. I've put 4000 miles on them so they're still new.

My buddies were the newer kevlar ones he absolutely hated them the first time he warrantied them I thought it was a bad batch but three times he sold the truck with the third set so I dunno wow that set lasted but thats enough evidence for me. When he first got them I thought they wete badass but when the problems started we both said buying them was a mistake. Maybe they fixed the design since then this was in 10/11.
