Tire Patches?

thats how i have been fixin tires at work since i started there a few years ago. we plug the hole, buff it all smooth, glue the patch on, then put some sealer around the patch. it the best way to fix a tire, if done right the plug and patch should outlast the rest of the tire. we used to use the combo ones. but now we use a seperate plug and patch.

Ok sounds good. I've had tires patched before, but always stayed away from plugs (unless it was on something i didn't care about).

Anyways, thanks for the info. Gotta keep learning......

stay away from the rope plugs, they are only for atv tires or stuff like that. but the rubber plugs and patches work great

Agreed. Only tire i ever let anyone put a plug in was out team's ski boat trailer. We towed about .5 miles a year on it.

Except right after we patched it, we needed to turn it into a makeshift flatbed and tow it from Sacramento to Canada and back. :doah:

I have a rope style plug in a tire on my work truck. Its been there for ~25,000 miles....

I got a 1/4 bolt in it on a jobsite. Didn't feel like putting the spare on, so I plugged it and aired it back up. I kept meaning to get it fixed properly, but never did. Tire is about wore out now, and no leaks.

What are the rope style plugs? The ones you can get at almost any gas station? Cuz Ive used those plugs on probably 20+ tires in the last 7-8 years and never had any of them fail or leak at all.

Thats the one's I was referring to.

They work, but after a while they start leaking, the concept of a plug is not the greatest but once you have a flat that is 1/4" the tire integrity is compromized anyway because that means the steel belts got broken or at least nicked, so now it's just a matter of time before the tire self destructs, so I see no problem limping on it with a role style plug till it's no good anymore.
I have had some that last a week, and some that lasted 5 years.
Now I only run tires for 2 years so I rarely have to deal with flats.
