I am trying to decide on keeping the Goodyear MTRs on the Jimmy or going to super swampers. The jimmy is just an offroad vehicle except to drive it an 1 or 2 hours to the trails. I mostly rockcrawl. I have had no problems with the MTRs yet, but was just wondering if super swampers perform better in rockcrawling. I noticed alot of big guys are using either style. Also if I decide to go bigger, how big should I go. My setup right now is 350, 700r4,208, 10 bolt front, and 12 bolt rear, both with 4.56 gears. Thanks for the help

Yea my Jimmy is alot lighter now. No top, no doors, no ac, plexyglass windshield, cheap japanesse fenders, hood, and core support, and gutted tailgate. I took off anything I didnt need.

I like the swampers...they are the tire to beat on the trail.

I'd stick to 36" or so with the half ton gear though as mudhog said. Even lightened up you're probably over 4400 lbs. Have you weighed it?

I have not weighed it yet, but I know its alot lighter. My lift is from Tuff Country and I bought 4" front ez ride and 6" rear to make up for the heavy top. Before I rolled it it sat 1 inch higher in the rear, now it sits 6 iches up everywhere. I would say thats pretty light now. I was thinking if I buy new tires they would be between 36"-38". I wouldnt run anything wider than 14.50 though.

How do you like the plexi glass winshield? How's the glare in the sunlight and against oncoming vehicles lights?

If I had a trail only rig I think I would use the TSLSX.All the things people bitch about wouldnt be an issue on a trail only rig.I like them because of the steel belted side wall.

I went w/ 36" TSL's under almost the exact conditions (the only diff is that your truck is lighter than mine). I liked the TSL because it is a bias ply which is stronger than a radial. The 36x12.5R15 is one of the only D load rated 15" tires. In the first 3 months that I owned my truck I blew out 2 tires and did not want to have to deal with that again.
The only drawback I see for the TSL's is that on long drives (like the 7 hours to Hollister) the sound can be murder on your ears (I have a full convertable). Still I would buy them again if I had the decision to make over.

the sidewalls are not steel belted, there are 2 steel belts (circumfrential) under the tread of the SX's. They do have a heavy duty-tough as nails sidewall, but not from the steel belts.

I am putting a light tint o it to keep the glare down. So far no problems because it is stil brand new but I know it will be hard to see after a while. As for the tires so far everyone is voting for swampers. I was think of the 38.5/14.50x15 swamper tsl sx. I know you guys say 38s are too big for 1/2 ton but I need the extra height when I air down to 7-8 psi. I also dont mind changing axles if they brake. I would rather brake an axle than a driveshaft. The reason is you still get compression braking when you brake an axle.

I don't know about the rock crawling and the lockers, but 38" tires on 1/2 ton gear will work where I go. Mud = little traction = less breakage. I don't know about rocks.

I'd probably keep what you have until it's upgrade time. 38s and 4.56s isn't really enough, but it'll work.

I dont drive it on the street except to the trails. Its not really streetable. I believe 4.56s will work fine for 38s especially since they will be only at 7 psi so they will be about 36" when aired down.

BTW in am locked up front and spooled in the rear.

7 psi on the road for an hour to get to the trail? Good luck.

Spool in back? Wow, that must be rough on the road.

I keep the tires around 30 for the street. As for the spool there is no problems on the street. I am use to driving drag cars on the street with spools.
