Well I am trying to decide on new tire for my 78 K5. I got it narrowed down to 2, BFG AT's, BFG MT's. the truck is mostly on road but if i see something to wheel i will most likly go for it. What ya think?

EDIT: the size is 33X12.50X15

i Like the goodyear MTR's myself. i've run TSL's, claws, and some hankook MT's, and finally my MTR's and i have to say that for both off and on road tire, my fave so far has been the MTR. the TSL is the best offroad i've had.

so my vote would be MTR. just really like how well they have worn and the way they ride:D

I Have explorer pro comp At's (35x12.5x15) for on the street very quite and handle nice. not much good at all for mud. the MT hum like crazy on the road. anything with large lugs is gona make noise. i usually throw my TSL's on for the winter and anytime im gona go play in the mud. The MT's would be a good all around tire if you dont mind the noise, its really not that bad you get used to it.

If it see's mostly road, then I would go for the AT's.

I have ran both sets, and I have found the MT's to be very loud on the road but good offroad.

The AT's are nice and quiet down the road and pretty grabby offroad and overall a good tire. I got close to 15,000 more miles out of the AT's as well.

Ditto on the MTR's. I ran them in 33x12x15 for two years and treadwear was excellent on road. Off road they held up well and is a great tire IMHO. AND, I kinda liked the road noise though....so my opinion is the MTRS!

Since majority is on road, I would go with the BFG AT's. Although the MTR's are great tires the BFG's are cheaper and seem to last longer, I got 80,000 miles out of my last set of 31's. Road noise is minimal. I had a set of BFG MT's and they are louder than my Krawlers.

I did run 40 psi on road in the AT's FYI. For the money they are hard to beat.

I say go for some fancy stuff with the Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ. If not then go the usual route of the BFG AT.

I like the BF M/T. They wear good and they have awesome traction. If they made one in 37 for a 16.5 rim I'd be running them instead of my SSR's. Plus I find the BF's to be half as loud as MTR's or my SSR's. The only quieter M/T i've found are the Toyo's but those are pretty pricey.

What about the Firestone Destination AT or MTs?

I'm considering those in 31x10.5x15 for my 87 Blazer. They've both gotten good reviews for all categories on Tirerack.

MTR's are out of my price range. and they dont last long enough for a dd
They do if you rotate them. I ran a set on my Tahoe for 2.5 years daily driving 20 miles a day. :D

I had buddy that bought some at the same time, never rotated 'em. They were worthless after 1 year.

But yeah they are expensive. I wanted them for my Blazer I couldn't justify the price for what I do.

Do you really need the BFG name and the 3 ply sidewall? Because other than those two things there isn't much about a BFG that a cheaper tire can't do for less...sometimes a lot less.

Right now I'm running Wild Country RTV muds on my Tracker. Great tires. I siped the center tread blocks and run them year round.

I had Interco TrXus MT's on my Ranger and straight out loved those things. Didn't even need to sipe them they were so good in the winter.

The wife's XL7 has Kumho muds on it (itsy bitsy 29" ones) and I again siped the center tread blocks. No complaints from either of us.

I've ran Coopers and their off-brand muds on other trucks in the past. Always a good product and I hear the new Cooper STT mud is even better than the old style.

The first tires I put on my Ranger were Mud Kings...great value for the money right there. Siped the wee outta them and they did great year round.

Friends have run General MT's with great success.

Any decent quality radial MT should get you at the very minimum 40k if you take care of them. Run the correct air pressure, ROTATE THEM REGULARLY (I do every 3k oil change), and don't abuse them and they should last just fine.

Buy muds. AT's are a waste of money unless the truck will NEVER see off pavement use. Especially living up in the snow/mud belt like you do. All Terrains + northern mud = muddy donuts and you going no where. Ask me how I know.
Yeah, they aren't quiet usually but honestly, some of mine have been pretty damn quiet and really, if the noise of your tire lugs hitting pavement bugs you that much...sell your truck and buy a Saturn. Not to mention this is a '78 K5 we're talking about here...right? After wind noise, engine and exhaust noise, various squeaks and rattles, and probably a decent stereo...who cares about the tires?

Well said...and I agree, I have also ran General M/T's with sucess and saved a buck or two!

Good man.

So why are you even thinking about AT's?

you think i am better off doing a mud tire? dont quite know yet put if my buddy stall has his tubing bender i am gonna be making a winch bumper and getting a hold of a 10,000lbs winch

Always. A mud tire will do you fine spring through fall and never leave you stranded when you find a muddy two track. All terrains are good in dry terrain...mostly...sometimes...
