Not asking what’s the “best” tire here, just looking for real world experiences and recommendations.

I’m really close to having all the parts to swap one tons under my burb. Looking at rims and tires now. For now I’m just trying to find the “cheapest but still decent” 8 lug rim as eventually I want to get some Trail Worthy Fab beadlocks for it. Tires however I can’t decide. Looking for a 35x12.50r17 and probably just an all terrain. I’m not opposed to a mid terrain but trying to be realistic and say that this thing will be mostly on the road. So I’d just wear out an MT. Im wanting a 10 ply also as it will be towing and will still run some dirt roads and be in pastures and stuff. Ive ran several sets of the BFG ATs and loved them but have not ran the newer KO2s. Ive also heard they have went down hill recently. Don’t know if that’s true or not. I had some Nitto Trail Grapplers on a J$&P I had and liked them too but being mostly on road I wore them out. I’m currently running some of the BFG KM2s on it but they are a 15 inch rim and are like 7 or 8 years old. Still look brand new tread wise as it mostly set for a long time but they are starting to dry rot. I also split a side wall on one when they were new and I slid off a rock. Which looking at the rock it makes me scratch my head on how it caused it to split.

So what say you CK5 brethren?

All the tires you mentioned are good tires

A legitimate question is how many miles a year are you going to run? If the other set of tires you have are 7-8 years, tread wear may be irrelevant. Because the tires will start weather checking before the tread is gone

Rims can be had around $100, @6872xtc has been shopping lately and can probably point you a good direction. I would go with 17s as the tire selection is much better
 
In terms of the sidewall, I haven’t experienced that on any of those. There’s a possibility you clipped it good on another rock before it opened. If you are doing trails with a lot of sidewall action, the newer styles seem to have a bit more protection on the sides
As always, check out the pictures and use good judgement

I got my tires from BBwheels, they were delivered and cheaper than anywhere else I could find them
 
My last set of ko2’s I only got 24k on my diesel. I switched to the ridge grapplers. They are quiet but aggressive.
 
I've always had good luck with Nitto Terra Grapplers on my diesels and other trucks. Usually get around 50k out of them. My parents have had good luck with the KO2's but they seem to wear pretty quickly. My brother in law has the ridge Grapplers but he gets maybe 30k out of them on his diesel.
 
I have been looking at tire and wheels, and it almost seems like the wheels are the same between several brands, however I don't have proof of that. I want to try and find one with the 3600 lb load rating, (even though I won't need it) , made in USA and hopefully with the valve stem tucked in a little from the bead. I have a Black Rock wheel ordered to check it out, should be in Tuesday. He gave me a price of $111 each.
My tire shop has given me prices that are a little better than what I find online, but that could probably be due to the dollars that I spend with them for my job.
I have been discussing tires with @Bent77 as I am looking at Nittos and Toyos. But I am not looking for "E" rated tires. My son put a set of BFG all terrains on his Duramax and they are wearing out quickly even though he isn't that hard on them. It would have been worse if he towed more or drove it harder.
 
If you want just any cheap off road tire that will dependably hold air a set of Bias Ply Super Swampers are cheap. They will wear out fast, and handle like crap on the street, but they will dependably hold air and run down the road for about 15,000 miles until you come up with the money for a set of rims and tires you really want.

All these have been on diesel trucks, lots of dirt road, snow, and majority of the mileage towing an average of 10,000 pounds. All E rated.

Toyo rt 35x12.50 lasted me a long time, did good in the snow, nice feel while towing, and have a mileage warranty.

Same goes for the toyo at2 35x12.50 just slightly better on road.

Toyo MT 35x12.50 was about the same as the rt, slightly better offroad but no mileage warranty

BFG ko2 35x12.50 did ok in the snow, slightly squishy feeling with no trailer on road, and felt like sponges towing. And were bald right around 20,000 miles if not a little less.

Current tire I have Goodyear Duratrac, yet I'm trying to keep the new truck stock so they're only 275/70r18. Also I only have about 2 thousand miles on them, but they seem great. I can't remember if they have a millage warranty but I think they do. Ive been towing about 13,000 pounds regularly and they feel very good! I live on a dirt road and they're doing well in the snow and mud. So they seem to be a good tire so far, time will tell.
 
I put 35 X 12.50 toyo open country AT's on my Tundra and my wifes Jeep. they are great tires. I reliably get 60,000 miles on those tires, barring alignment problems or something. But they are not cheap.

For my blazer, I am about to start my one ton swap in a about a week as well. I found a guy here locally that sold me a set of unknown beadlock wheels and lakesea 40" tires for $1100. I know these tires wont last long. But they were the size I wanted to be able to test fit everything. Like you, Ill put better tires on it after all the fitting and stuff is done. Craigslist and FB marketplace is your friend.
 
I just bought some 37x13.50x17 BFG mud terrain km2s and some 17x9 steelies to replace the 38x14.50x20 Nitto mud Grapplers and 20x10 XD bro wheels. The tires are 30lbs/piece lighter than the buttons so I'll be dropping a 120lbs of rotating weight which will be nice. Add that along with the weight I've dropped from the door removal and trimming the hard top, I've dropped nearly 200lbs off of this truck.
