My buddy is gonna machine some arms for his crossover and he can get some titanium for doing them. would it be overkill? Should he just find some steel (what grade) or would some 6061 aluminum hold up??
Mild steel is plenty strong for this application. Yes, titanium would be overkill and cost a ton of money if he isn't getting it free. 6061 aluminum is strong but IMO not strong enough for this purpose.

The machinists I've spoken with tell me that titanium is uber-hard to work with....the tooling has to be REALLY sharp to work at all and once it starts dulling even a little, you need to change it out.
That being said, WHY NOT?? If you have someone willing to do it (for free) and you can get the material (for free) it would be something different, cool and LIGHT!!!!
I still think it would be cool to use titanium tubing for things like draglinks (highsteer only) and for the upper links in a suspension setup. Basically anything that wouldn't touch rocks. Cutting threads in titanium wouldn't be that much machining, and it WOULD save a decent amount of weight......but again it depends on how cheap you can get the raw materials.
"Achieving lightness usually requires a heavy amount of dollars"
