Doing a trazer build and in my search for a cab I've come across a former mud race truck being parted out with no title. Everything is stripped in the interior even the dash, meaning the vin number is also gone. Is there anywhere else on the cab there would be a full vin? It's a 1979 cab. I ask because I want to title the truck without problems.

The original doors had a sticker with the VIN and GVW ratings, also in the glove box door there was a sticker...if you find a build sheet under the seat,or an options list on the front inner fender the VIN is on that too..
I dont know if they stamped the VIN anywhere else on the sheet metal..

Thank you I really appreciate it. Do you think it'd be easier to claim it as specially constructed or reconstructed and get a completely new vin plate?

I have no idea on that--every state has it's own rules as far as issuing or re-issuing titles and VIN numbers...(and it seems every RMV cop has a different interpretation of the laws too!)...

It might not even be possible to get an "original" title for that cab,the only way you might would be to track down the last owner that had it registered and see if they would allow you to apply for a lost title in their name and pay for the fee--even then, without a VIN tag,if you ever get pulled over and they see it missing or a home made one in it's place, things could get dicey..
It might be possible to get a "salvage" title or have a new VIN issued as a "custom" build maybe...either of those will kill resale value a lot,if that is a potential problem...

A few guys I know have bought rust free un-titled cabs and swapped them onto their trucks, and they just re-used the VIN and title off the original cab--which is technically "illegal",but they have not had any troubles either--they usually dont inspect old vehicles that closely here --as long as the title matches the VIN and it's properly registered, not reported stolen, chances are no one but the owner would ever know the cab was swapped..

I have been told buy a former body guy who rebuilt well over 100 of these trucks its the tag on the dash for full vin only.

and I just cut up a cab on a 82 and found nothing extra .

better check to see what kind of paperwork is involved with new vin state check over .

in ny you need receipts for all parts used new or used and also go threw state safety inspection at a regional station by appointment only . then it has to be towed in/out of that also .

Seems like too Much of a mess to Bother with. My buddy just had this problem with a bike he bought. Ended up Just trading it p someone for something else. Good luck though. It's a mess sometimes to get this kind of thing figured out.
