Hey everyone, I am looking at buying a crew cab, I found this one near me, was wondering if this one is was going to turn into more money and work than its worth. Its a 88, 6.2L na, NP465/208. It was a C30 but the guy made it a 4X4. My problem with the truck is he built the 4X4 by cutting up a K10 and put it under the C30.:doah: So it has a set of 10 bolts and half ton front springs. The front has 4 inch blocks and the rear has 6 inch blocks. Both are illegal for state inspection and stupid (IMO). any ideas? what rears should it have D60/14BFF? What is the best way to do a 2wd conversion? I was thinking about a set of B52s for the front but what trucks had the 52s? I am not looking to offroad this much, I am looking to build a nice cheap tow rig? Thank in advance

what do you mean, "cutting up"? did he take the k10 brackets off the old frame and put them on this one, or a sort of cut and splice deal? Half tons under that baby scares the crap outta me though. But that's an easy fix.

I agree. If the issue is simply axle-swapping back to 1 ton axles, I don't see the major problem. If frame hacking has taken place, that puts the truck in a different category of project. :eek1:

To buy or not depends on what work you want to end up doing. FWIW, I'd redo axles to get a truck with a clean body, if that was the only issue it had. But I'm somewhat swayed by my dislike for bodywork. :dunno:

You should be able to get a nice discount if it's not street legal in your area...right?

Lift blocks in the front? F*ck that noise... Anyone who does that is bound to have done other stupid things that you won't find out about until you've already bought it, then they become your problems.

Sorry about the "cut up" comment, I meant he took the front leaf springs plus mounts and FUSHs out of the K10 and bolted them to the C30 frame. No he don't cut up the C30 frame at all.

This was his post "It was a 2wd c30 converted into a 4wd k20. It needs new leaf springs in the front (4" lift needed to clear 2wd bracket) the forks in the sm465 need to be replaced because of wear 2nd gear only goes in when you get it just right. Bracket that holds transfer case and tranny up needs to be altered or replaced so front driveshaft can be hooked up. Truck is on 33" mud tires and the axles are off a 2500 suburban. Price is flexible need to get rid of truck".

The rear springs are narrower than the 10 bolt spring perches so the made some crazy looking lift blocks to make the rear fit. I 1 ton axle swap is needed and some suspension work but nothing major that I saw.

The body is very straight and only has a little bit of rust on the rockers and one spot on the drivers floor. Clean for the area I live in.

He is flexible on the price, he changed jobs and needs some different. What do you guy think you would pay?

I wouldn't expect him to get more than $1000 here for that, needing tranny work and with a half-done 4WD conversion. I'd expect less if it wasn't so clean in the sheet metal. But I also know that I live in an area where vehicles are cheaper than many places. As a reference, here's a local ad for a 1990 K30 crew cab with a reasonable amount of rust for $2500. It's still posted after 2 months. And it's intact.

On the nice side, you know he hasn't beat on the front axle too badly if it's not hooked up yet.

I love me a crew cab but I'd only give $1500-2000 because of all the issues and 3/4 ton axles. Getting a d60 under it is going to be at least 500 more, a transmission can be had for nearly nothing at least around here. If you aren't afraid of body work, definitely pick it up if you can cheap.

But I wouldn't drive it home.

full of sh!T on 3/4 ton axles . look at the pic again 6 lug and stock 1/2 ton rally wheels.

if you want a project and body is clean 1000 or less . it is hard to find non rusted out stuff up here in north east .

Well I know its been 2 months, but I did buy this Monster:woot:. I also picked up a 79 K30, that I drove home (1 hour test drive). So I have the D60, 14Bolt, and SM465/NP205. The swaps have begun. So how do I turn this into a build thread?
