Found an 88 Burb in decent shape for 600. NO TITLE. owner says it was lost in a move. How much does it cost (and how involved) is it to apply for new title?
Thanks,

You'd have to ask your DMV or Secratary of state or whoever issues titles, for the laws and procedures in your state.
Usally, it's much easier for the owner to get a replacment title than somebody else.
It may be simple, it may be a major hassle. I'd take the VIN down and take it to the DMV and ask them before you bought. They'll tell you what you have to do and should also be able to at least tell you that VIN is not stolen or something.

i agree completely, even if the owner dosnt have the title, there is paperwork somewhere linking his name to the vehicle... if he really owns it. which is not an unreasonable fear these days. You could offer to pay for him to get the new title, as youd be paying to get it retitled anyway. For you to show up to the DMV to get a title for a vehicle their records say belongs to someone else, on your say so... in a post 9/11 world??? i wish you the best of luck in that battle.

personally, i wouldnt buy any vehicle that didnt have the title in hand. Unless i was buying a project/parts vehicle from a reputable dump... and even then there is normally a salvage title or something.

thanks guys.
just talked to the guy again...it appears he bought the truck from a friend who lost the title so it has no paper work in his name....and it needs a fuel pump and new battery
i also found out in NC you can take a bill of sale to the dmv.
good looking truck for 600....a shame not to try i think.

I would guess the bill of sale has to be from the guy whose name is in the DMV's database. I wouldn't think you could just walk in with a bill of sale from just anyone and a VIN and get a title, otherwise people would be doing that right and left claiming they own the vehicle.

It's a good deal sure, but just be a bit cautious. I'd be leary of that story personally. And when you asked, the story got more in depth.

The old adage, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, applies here I think.
Ask him to call his buddy and get the title. I'd also call your DMV yourself and ask what the procedure is.

The guy first said he lost the title in a move then upon questioning further he states the prior owner never gave him the title? Run far far away from this deal.

As much as you have to be cautious, it can work. Get a bill of sale from the old owner to you, or old owner to current, then current to you.

I had a car or 2 registered with a chain of Bill of Sales.

This ^^^^^. Run Forest Run. There is something fishy with it, you dont need to get caught with either stolen goods or something that cant be titled anyways. Honestly, even if it was for parts id pass. Not worth the hassle no matter how good the deal is. I hate ppl that lie about **** like this and try to pull fast ones. Ill ask ppl that Im buying stuff the same question at different times, youd be surprised at the diff. answers youll get.

If the owner you are looking at buying it from is the owner listed on the title then it is a very simple process for him to file for a lost title and get a new one.

Edit: as stated above, run away, if the current owner isn't the registerd owner it can be a major PITA to get resolved.

just in case one more post will help it sink in.... save your money for something worthwhile, and stay far away from this ugly mess.

in short

NOT TO BUY!!! is the answer to your question.

Unless of course you have a junker on the way to the scrap yard with a clean title in your name, pop the vin off and onto the burb.Illegal yes.But it's one way around it.I've got a clean title and a vin in the waiting just for this purpose.I'll exhaust all other legal efforts first, but I'd play dirty if I wanted something bad enough. Let the flaming commence:doah:

What if the owner previous to the man you are trying to buy it from sent in a release of liability, but the man you're buying from never filled out the title transfer and sent it in? If he sent the release of liability, and you have two bills of sales, it shouldn't be that hard... But then again, I've come across running, titled burbs for $500 (rare, but i've seen it)

If you're iffy about it, or the guy sounds sketchy, just bail on the deal. If it's really nice, and you want it BAD, I'm sure there's a way that you can get it dealt with. Now's the time to be buying though (especially gas guzzlers) so if you pass, there will be another.
