My autometer tach went out on me the other day (made a post about it), anyways, im debating on weather to go without or replace it. $100bux can do alot of things right now. I dont wheel hard and the truck is 90% street driven.

So what is the arguement to keep a tach?

Truck is stock 305cid 700r that sees street driven.

If it's stock and street driven there's really no point in a fancy Tach....unless you like to wrap it out and manually bang gears :D

with an automatic a tach is certainly something you can live without. Its a nice tool to guage if your trans is starting to slip, once youve gotten an idea about your truck and know where its supposed to be. if suddenly your driving around 500rpm higher than you were, you can tell somethings wrong. by the same token, ive driven my truck for a few days without a speedometer cus the cable snapped. i know first gear change is at 25mph, and second gear change is at 45mph, and other than that, just drove with the flow of traffic.

For a manual, i like having a tach to drive at a particular rpm (usually 1800rpm, sure, you can drive by feel and by ear, but i like to be more precise.

So yeah, like i said, its a personal opinion, a tach can be a nice thing to have, but for daily driving, its certainly not required.

now if youre racing the sucker, and trying to shift at redline or something, tach is a must have.

Don't spend 100 on one for an auto. Go get a cheap one from summit or kragen for $40, and mount to the front pillar trim screw. Search for posts by me about tach mounting, theres a pic online.

Spending $100 on a fancy one for an auto truck just sounds silly.
You could buy the $40 one and spend $40 on beer for the install, and still come out ahead :)

For a street driven stock 305 with an auto, I say spend the money on something else, or buy a cheapy for less money and have a tach and some change :D

Thanks. yea im going to go without for now. If I do get one, its going to be a sunpro from discount auto for 30bux. lol.

I don't have on in my crewcab yet and I tell ya this much. I hate it without a tach. Normally I pay more attention to the tach then the speedometer when I have one.

It's an automatic.

Unless you're deaf a tach really doesn't do much for you. I say if you could use the cash more elsewhere right now then spend it elsewhere and wait until you have extra cash to spend on a tach. I also don't believe in buying cheap junk to "get you by", just wait and buy a quality product the first time. :thumb:

My speedo's never seem to work I have to have a tach its one of the first mods I make

Plus like 4x4high mentioned I'm deaf ( damn near anyway) so a tach is nice lol

yeah most of my vehicles have had broken/miscalibrated tachs so i always went with what gear am i in and rpm to judge speed.

Visual aids do help when you can't hear a thing over a big block with Flowmasters.
