Who is running a big axle small tire combination? My Blazer has 60 front 70 rear. It sits on 37 sx's. I know in the mud it will be an anchor. What about rocks. Anybody running a like combination? Does it make you a better driver or just piss you off?:doah:

Thanks

I ran tons and 38's on my scout for many years before stepping up to 42's I didn't notice a whole lot of difference in ground clearance "issue" but the bigger tires did perform better

I would say the few inches you lose in clearance is well worth the increase in strength

hell, my cucv is on 33's with the 14ff and d60, dont think ill ever break it no matter what i do, rather have that than bigger tires (though the 14ff ground clearence sucks, theres not alot of hardcore offroading territory around here)

I am only on 36x12.50x16.5" Swampers. The one ton axles allow me to abuse it like there is no tomorrow, and not worry.

I thought you were talking aout 31x10.5's or something when I read the thread title.

Thanks for the replies. I was at Gray Rock for the weekend and took a little crap from the guys. I also watched more than one 14 bolt become the anchor. Most guys around heare seem to think the 37's are too small and compromise the big heavy K5.

Any others?:D

You took the K5 to GR? Pics or it didn't happen!!!!!!!!1 :D

I met a guy once with a stock-height K5 on 31's...and with 1-tons underneath it.

He had no plans to lift or go with bigger tires. I think he even had running boards. :eek1:

Total waste of time and energy IMO.

All in all a great weekend. Bad storms all three days. Thay had a gust or two over 65mph Friday night. Friday was the best day to ride. But it was really HOT!! Saturday morning the rain kept us coollbut caused traffic jambs. Sunday we called it about 11:00 because the bottom fell out.

Hijack off.

So will little tires kill me or make me have to be a better driver?

I had 35x12.50's and went from the rear 10-bolt to a 14FF with just the minor shave and trim (grinded off the lip), and to be honest didn't notice any difference in regards to capability because of ground clearance. I did notice an overall performance gain because I could drive it harder without worrying about blowing up the rear axle.

Next step was D60 front and 13/38-16 TSL's which are pretty short for being called a "38". I would say they were closer to the typical 37, or even a tall 36. Ran those tires for years before switching to 39.5's (which are a good 3" taller). Again, can't really say I noticed any difference in ground clearance, but overall the vehicle is more capable.

Overall I would say the ability to drive the vehicle harder without breakage, and the simple idea of greater dependability, greatly outweighs the minor differences in ground clearance.

My K10 has 3/4 tons right now with 35s, and I think it will be ok nothing Narly around here. Im sure whenever the K5 gets 38s or so itll get 3/4 tons too.

Only reason Id get a 60 is if I got a sweet deal on it.

one ton axles with 36 inch pizza cutters. Performs well on rocks and in mud. No trimming required!

I ran 37's with a D60/14 bolt, it worked pretty well.

Eventually broke a 30 spline stub and WARN hub:

Upgraded to 35 spline outers and 42's, no breakage since and the truck is WAY more capable.

I believe I read that those 13/38-16's were the original mold for TSL
s 38s and when they went with a standard 12.5 wide they renamed them.

I'm running 36's and even with the 14bff shaved I had it hung on a long pretty bad. Its really a compromise of strength to clearance. I've got a d44 and it has a load of clearance but even with the bling shafts I ordered I wouldnt be surprised if I pop one.

All in all I say plowing a few rocks or scraping some dirt is worth the strength.

my K30 runs 35's - standard and metric, depending on what i want... standards are 35/12.5-16 swamper TSL SX's, and metrics are 315/75-16 BFG M/T's... mounted on stock 16x6.5's...

i want to go to 38's because it needs the look, but i don't think it will drastically improve anything...

damn i think i have everyone beat.

i got some street tire 33 12.50s on my 1 ton k5

before taking the lift off.. it did have 38s on it

a buddy of mine had 1 tons and 33s on his NICE k5. i think 4 inches of lift, totally overkill but kinda cool to see.
90' k5 tbi350/700/241 fixed yoke, d60, 14b 4.10 and detroits f/r 4'' tc springs all around with 33'' mud terrains

Get your grinder out and work on the underside of the 14 bolt,
smooth out the rough edges. It won't get hung up as much....
