Is is possible to have too much spark? I have an msd billet dizzy and recently added a 6a box. it increased my throttle response and acceleration power considerably but now when my engine gets warmed up it sounds like its pinging.

I did nothing other than add the box, no change to timing or anything like that and it only happens when the motor is warm. Ive tried retarding the timing some but then it just runs like crap and doesnt solve my pinging issue. could I have too much spark?

You could try increasing the gap on the spark plugs, or a colder plug.
Maby the fuel mixture is a bit lean.

Sounds like you need more octane

Ive been running premium like 92 or 93 octane so if that is the problem then Ill need to change something.

may try some colder plugs and see how it does.

I've had this problem on a Chevelle before. The solution I found is exactly what was said.

2 ranges colder plugs and about a .060 gap. max, minimum of .045.

After you get the plugs set up, try it out. If you still get the pinging, readjust the carb. Just don't change more than one part of tuning at a time. Change either the carb or the plugs, but not both at the same time, otherwise you won't know exactly what sets it straight!:D

well I solved my problem. after work I grabbed some colder plugs and put em in and took it for a drive. got warm and never started pinging. the problem was that it never got a chance too cause once it hit 3000 rpm it started popping and the rpms dropped like it had a rev limiter, my box doesnt have a rev limiter:eek1:. when it started doing this I turned around so I could head back to the house. made it about half way home and it died. sat and waited for it to cool and it still wouldnt start. luckily I carried the old module and wiring harness and swapped it back over. it now runs good with no rev limit or pinging and the box is on its way back to summit.:D
