1st option makes sense.

2nd option I don't recommend, too slow on hwy 50 across colorado, it would be smarter to take I-70 from Grand Junction to Denver and then either continue east on I 70 into Kansas or you could go south on I25 to Pueblo then east. I would stick with the interstates myself in case something breaks there are more larger towns, and more help, auto parts etc plus no problem being passed or passing as it is all multiple lanes.

3rd rand mcnally link didn't work for me.

If you take the I80 route across wyoming and nebraska at Sidney nebraska stop at the Cabela's, Its right next to the interstate. Good store

Go the first route easier and faster and expect snow. If you need help let me know know lots of towers and stuff.

I live just north of the route too next to Ogden

If you need any more help, I am in Tooele and work out of SLC. If you need anything just let me know. Or pop me a PM before coming in to town.

The first route is definately the best option, but plan for snow as has been said.

Thanks for info, will be heading out of Tooele on Friday evening if all goes well or maybe afternoon sometime.

Excited about making the trip, i love road trips and love snow. Lets just hope i dont get enough snow to stop the trip back

Depending on weather you can take 70 all the way to Kansas City. As stated prepare for snow. If 70 is closed in CO, you can take 50 out of Grand Junction, follow it to Colorado Springs, then get back on 70. Just check to make sure 50 isn't closed too. 50 really isn't that bad through CO. The road itself is pretty well kept, just a lot of turns. Keep it in mind as a back up, not a primary choice.

The first choice is still the best, but weather can change that at any time. 80 through WY is pretty nice. Lonely as hell, but a nice trip just the same. kgblazerfive has a good point about doing it in a 'new' truck though. It's not a place to get stranded at night. I can't think of many places I would like to get stranded, but bfe in winter isn't high on the list.

50, 70, 80 are all well taken care of roads, so I think weather will be your deciding factor. There's a colder front coming to OK this weekend, but I'm not sure where it's coming from.

I would not drive accross WY at night in a unfamiliar truck, it can be like in the negatives with nothing for lots of miles, spend the night in Evanston if you must leave that night.

what kind of truck are you driving back? I just got done with a road trip (1500 miles) and I did the I70 stretch from denver to grand junction. It wasnt to bad in the K5 but man coming up vail pass and that other one that gets almost to 12000 ft gave the old tbi a run for her money. I think I did 30-35 going up those 2 passes in 3rd gear the whole way. Tranny never go to hot but man I was getting passed like I was going backwards lol. After that it was smooth sailing I didnt have any issues holding 75, it is a beautiful drive too.

stock suspension/tires? It would be so cool if you said yes. The lifted trucks don't like the freeway in the mountains.

lol yeah dual tank, and it is lifted and has tsls.

gonna be an expensive trip for sure.

i figure at least $600 in gas and more then likely more

SRW, and i think he is including the spare but not sure. they are brand new 38" tsl's so hopefully no tire problems will arise

Even with the 38's and those 6% grades thrown in there I was still able to maintain 12+mpg while doing mostly 70-75 mph. I think the the old motor really like the cold air but as I climbed higher and higher it was pretty apparent she was hurting for power.I pumped my tires up to almost 40 psi for the occasion, seemed to help out a bit too. with a 454 and carb it shall be interesting;)
