I used to own an '88 1/2-ton suburban and thought I could apply that manual to my '91 3/4-ton. I had replaced the rotors, ball joints and bearings on that 1/2 ton and now have to do the same on the 3/4-ton. I still had the wheel bearing lock nut socket I used on the 1/2-ton and thought I was all set. Then manual for the '88 says that the same socket is used on both 1/2 and 3/4-ton vehicles. However, that is not the case in '91. I found the hard way that the socket does not fit the '91 3/4-ton. Can anyone identify the correct socket. I called some local parts stores only to find they are clueless. The 1/2-ton socket fits a 2 1/4" nut. So, I guessed and ordered on-line a socket for 2 1/2" nut. It is too big. A web search us unclear and let to my ordering the wrong one. No more guessing. I must ask the experts here. Your help appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know what kind of axle you have on the 91 and the 88 but stock they should be same.
If the one that worked on the 88 didn't work on the 91 something is not original.
Both 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton spindle nuts should be the same for those years

Panic set in when the socket did not go on the lock nut right away and I ASS-U-MEd that it was due to the fact that I now was trying to use it on a 3/4-ton. However, thanks to your posts I became careful as I should have been at first. I looked around my parts area and found a spindle with the lock-nuts on them. I took a nut and matched it to the socket and I looked like it should have gone on. Inspection showed that a couple of burrs were on two opposing tabs in the socket making slightly to big to fit the notches in the nut. I could not see that when the socket was stuck into the axle shaft. I suspect that my oldest or one of his buddies tried to bang the socket onto something it didn't quite fit. I took a metal file to the burrs and in a couple of minutes the socket fit perfect. Project completed.
