I have all the equipment for burning and erasing the "2732A" style chips but whats required for the newer style chips in the long blue housing? The chip that inside the "blue housing" cannot be removed so is there something to plug the long style into? Are they still erased with the UV eraser??

So either setup would use the "EEprom" so there is no need to use the UV eraser but would my Pocket Programmer program these EEprom chips? Where did you get your wiring chart for the 16197427 ECM? I'm thinking about upgrading my ECM as well and I already have the VSS (GM optical) on my truck. Can I burn the current "BIN" im using on a 7747 chip onto a 7427 EEprom chip??

From the Transtronics website http://secure.transtronics.com/osc/product_info.php/cPath/55/products_id/621
Pocket EPROM Programmer USB connects via the USB port to program your EEPROM devices. No messy card to install - just plug in your pocket programmer and go.

The datasheet for the SST 27SF512 chip is here:

I called Transtronics, they say yes, the pocket programmer can erase and program the SST 27SF512 chips. Transtronics strongly advised that you update the software you have for the Pocket Programmer.

Which Pocket Programmer do you have? USB II?

I'll get back the '427 PCM questions later.

I have the PPIII just like in the picture. If the memcal (blue chip) has the knock sensor stuff built in does that mean that the "external knock module" is no longer needed with this ECM swap??

Correct, the "external knock module" is NOT needed with the '427 upgrade.

Is this the "G1" or "G4" adaptor from Moates? Moates also has a HDR1 memcal header for reading the stock memcal. Why can't the stock chip in the memcal just be "erased" and reprogrammed with this header adaptor??

G1 is from Moates.net

Compatibility
The G1 is compatible with the following vehicles:

  • 1986-1993 TPI & LT1
  • 94-95 TBI trucks
The G1 is compatible with the following chips:

  • SST 27SF512
  • 27C128/256/512 based eeproms
The G4 is also from Moates.net. The G4 is designed for a car computer, that is not interchangeable with GM Pickup computers.

The factory chip is likely a PROM so it CAN NOT be erased and reprogrammed. I really don't know what the factory chip is?:dunno: I don't know if the factory is chip is an EPROM chip that can be erased with UV? I don't know if the factory chip is EEPROM that can be erased with an electronic signal?

What I do know, is some older TPI MEMCAL chips were EPROM.

I did some checking with my local GM dealer yesterday and to be honest there is really no reason for this upgrade. (for me) GM continued to use the 7747 clear up till 96 on most trucks and larger vehicles with manual shift. It seems that the "red/blue" ECM was needed for the ability to control the electronic transmission. We could not find any memcal available for a manual shift truck? All of the manual shifts we looked up were still using the 7747 ECM, but we did'nt look them all up.
Anyway I have 3 memcal chips here now from 93 and 95 auto trucks and all three of these have the UV window under the sticker? I think im going to buy that HDR1 header from moates and see if it will read the memcal and then try to erase one to see what happens??

I sem to rember seeing some 4.3 and 7.4 liter maual transmission applications with the red / blue PCM's. $OE is the definition file for the 7.4 liter manual trans. I agree, the 7747 is adaquate for a manual trans. I personally like the faster baud rate / processor of the red / blue PCM.

Let me know how the UV erase / programming goes.

Wiil do! I pulled all 3 of those memcal's apart and every one has the UV window. With the HDR1 on order it will take a few days to get it but i'll let you know how it turns out.
