Does anyone know if the tool for a 5th gear nut in an NV4500 will work on the mainshaft nut on a 4wd sm465? The specific socket for the 465 is over $300...the nv4500 one is just over $100. Or is there another socket that would work on the 465 nut? Would like to save money where I can. Thanks

What nut are you referring too? There is no nut inside a 465 that I can remember. There are tons of snap rings, press fit bushings, and press fit bearings holding it together. There is a nut holing the output yoke on a 2wd sm465

Go to the 2:00 mark on this video and you will see the locknut I am speaking of.

That "nut" looks a lot like the front wheel bearing ones on a 4x4 ...
I wonder if they might be the same,or if some other axle nut socket for a different truck might work ?..

Maybe you could make a socket out of suitable sized tubing or pipe,or an old socket,by grinding out the areas around the "nubs"..
I had to improvise one for my front hub out of a muffler adapter one time ,before I bought the correct tool,I just marked out where to grind it away, and drilled a hole thru both sides and used a piece of rod as a "T" handle..
I gave it to a friend with an old Dodge 4x4 pickup that had the same thing as mine..he used it several times until he got the right socket..

I’ve disassembled them without the fancy tools

I didn't remember the nut from my 465 build so I went back and looked at a few pics, interestingly my ORD 32 spline shaft does not use one.

That would be part 22 in the blow up schematics.
No help from me, I have yet to tackle mine, I have the parts, and no time
Part 22 is a thrust washer between 2nd and 3rd gear.

I realize now that that schematic doesn’t have the nut op is referring to. None of the 465 main shafts I have used have had that nut, but they have all been aftermarket shafts.

Does the washer have 4 notches

I rebuilt my SM465 without anything real fancy. Beat that nut off there with a punch just like in the video. Its not a big deal. I did not buy a socket, just used what is in my tool box, not a pro box by any means. I have a press, a bearing separator for using in the press (same wrong separator as the vid, works fine, don't worry about it), snap ring pliers and normal hand tools. That's all it took. You need a set of snap ring pliers with the flat ends that can take off the snap rings with the angle cut ends. Not just the snap rings with the holes in them. I used that exact video series on a tablet at the bench. Its 100%, just pause and play as you do the steps.
