Shift halfway into reverse. Don't just yank it up and out of there...lift slowly and note which forks drop into which collar. It's a bit finicky to get the one shift collar lined back up on re-assembly...
You might have to mess with the reverse idler gear to get the top back on, it likes to slide around, but to get the top back on it must be 1/2 way engaged as well. It can be a frustrating process the first time you pull the cover. Good luck
