top seal???

As far as I know the top has never been off my 81 2 wd Blazer , I am starting on the body and want to take it off for sanding and primeing , it dose not leak now, in general will I have to put a new seal between top and cab? if so is that a dealer part or can I get one online, any idea to cost or any tricks to taking it off and putting back on?

Hey mrivan, this question has been covered about a dozen times but, since we love all our Blazer buddies here(especially us 2WD dudes) I'll give ya a brief run down. My '74 has the original(poor condition) top seals and it hasn't ever leaked. It's off about as much as it's on. All the seals are available from the aftermarket. No tricks to removing other than it's real heavy. You may have a couple of hidden bolts inside the rear panels that come in from the bottom. You might try a search for this topic for more info. Good luck and welcome!! One last thing most non 2WD specific questions will get allot more response from the 4WD section. This is kind of the "red-headed" step child area of the message board.

mrivan, I was just browsing thru the 2x4 section, although we have a 4x4, and he is right...unless it dry-rotted and falling apart, no need to replace it. the ridges in the cab and the corresponding ridges on the top will basically seal themselves. Just make sure you put your bolts back in tight when you put the top back on. Otherwise, I woudln't bother replaceing them, unless you just have the urge! If you are still looking for parts, you may want to check out LCM. They have a cataloge that you can basically re-build from scratch a Blazer. With reasonably priced items/and good quality. Just my 2 cents.

Mine has been off every year at least twice a year for the past 6 - and it is the original seal and never a leak. Couple of things you have to keep in mind in addition to the other guys comments - when reinstalling, make sure you tighten the bolts going into the top frame first, then do the bed rail bolts. This keeps it snug at the main seal area. I usually Armor All the seal when it is off to keep it supple. The top takes me and my wife, it was weighed recently in at 182 lbs by another member after much discussion on weight ranging from 150 to 400 lbs!
