I'm taking the top off for the first time tomorrow. This is the third blazer I've owned and the first time I'll ever have the top off.

How heavy is the top? Anything other than just unbolting it to get it off?

I haven't gone topless since I first bought my K5 and the reason was because it was way too heavy. 2 huge guys plus a smaller guy had to put it on(bought with top off). I can't wait to go topless again but would like a rollbar first.

It'll rain on Tuesday. :deal:
:D

tops arnt that heavy. Ive taken mine off twice by myself. This is the full vert top too.

last time i did it i bought a 2x4, cut it to width of the top and put some holes in it to run bolts in it. Bolted it to the hole in the rear of the top after i had it unbolted and moved back a little.

stuck a spare tire down on the ground. slid the top down the bedrails till it was close to teetering. stuck 2 peices of rubber underneath on the edges of the bedside so it wouldnt scratch. got in the back of the top and grabbed it by the 2x4 and lowered it onto the tire. propped it up, move my truck forward, set it down. stuck a skateboard under the 2x4 and rolled it into the garage.

took about 5 mins.

dont forget the 2 hidden rear bolts 1 per side at the back most corner abopve the brake lights. thay go up from the bottom body rail on the inside of the body.

Well good for you.

First thing I did when I bought my first blazer was take the top off and go for a drive.

You get lots of funny looks driving topless in Idaho.................in January.............while its snowing. :D

In all fairness, my first blazer was a 70 that had more rust than metal. The top was all that held it together and I knew it would be a disaster if I took it off. The next was a 71 and I don't know why I never took the top off. Lazy I guess. Anyway, can't wait to get this one off so it will start raining. It's been dry for too long.

If you have interior panels down the sides you have to remove them to get to the hidden bolts back in the rear corners.

the top is 2-3 hundred pounds.i have the double wall first gen top.took about 4 guys to get it on and off.there are a lot of good pully systems i have seen to get the tops off.but you need a garage for that.ive also seen a frame a guy made outa 2x4s that he would back up to and slide the top on after unbolting it.

Hardest part was getting the seat belts off. Three of us lifted it off with no problems. I do wonder about putting it back on though. The clip that has the threads for one of the vertical bolts fell to the bottom of the pillar so now it is just a huge whole. I hopr the others side doesn't do that as well.

Cool, the only suckage is the removal of two shoulder seat belts in the rear on the 90 and 91 models. You think GM could have come up with a more elegant solution to the newer seat belt regs...

It's the only thing I don't like about the 90 and 91 K5's. Mine is a 90. :doah:

BTW, I've actually weighed a hardtop with slider glass (half top). 188 lbs. The full vert top may be closer to 250, but if I was betting I'd hedge and say 225.

190 lbs sounds right. I was able to get in the back with the seat folded up, place myself in the middle with my back against the roof and squat thrust and walk that bastard off. Lucky for me my driveway descends below grade with a stone retaining wall. Eventually the height of the wall lines up with the height of an open tailgate. I could walk it right off and get it on the ground and crawl out from under it. Gonna have to call in reinforcements to get it back on though, maybe sometime after Thanksgiving.

Good lookin truck BTW. I like the white/lt blue color combo. What a difference driving it without the top on, don't ya think?

Dude! Your the first guy I've seen here with exact same truck as mine.:thumb: I changed my pinstripe to red.
Oh and mines an 89 so I don't have power mirrors or the shoulder harness bolted to the roof.
Here's how I take my top off.
