This was the first time I took off the top. My expierence was great having it off but it was not an easy job. It took 3 of us to take it off with me pushing my back up against the roof to break it loose. There was absolutly no smell of engine oil as we were driving down the road. If I have the back window down I get a great buzz but I stink for the entire day when the top is on.

Putting the top back on was not as bad as I thought. Took about 20 minutes to get all the bolts back in.

Question...

How tight do you guys make the bolts when you put everything back together?

Thanks for looking!

I remember the first time I took the top off. I couldn't get it to come of
cause of the two bolts in the back that go up. I had always thought that I ruin something If I took it off.
HA!!!!!!!!!! Now It and the doors stay off all summer.:saweet:

that is one sweet lookin blazer. i only put 4 bolts back in with no leaks. some people are different. i just hate takin those bolts in and out. 2 in the front on the cab and 2 in the very back

This is why God invented the Blazer. Of course, first He invented the full-convertibles, but the half-cabs are a close second. (I own one of each ;)

i only use 4 bolts when i have my top on which is rarely. 2 in the back on each side and 2 in the center top holes. to each his own but i never have any leaks with that setup. just like a cap on a truck they only use 4 clamps

I have never counted..How many bolts are there?
Where are these 2 bolts in the back that go up??

Those aren't really bolts, they are centering pins to ensure the cap is where it needs to be.

There are a total of 16 bolts from the factory, 5 on each side and 6 around the cab. Mine currently has 4 on the cab, and 1 on each side, and more may be "lost" the next time I take my top off.

not to highjack but where are the two hidden bolts?

On mine, there are 2 hidden bolts towards the back that bolt in from underneath the bed rail. You have to take out some of the screws that hold the side trim paneling on to get behind there and then you'll be able to reach them.

You're a little confused. There are two bolts at the very back, farther back then the pins. They bolt from under the body through the cap. You have to take off part of the side panels to see them. Yours were probably never reinstalled by a previous owner

I really wanna go topless. Jus dont have any place to put the top (live in apt) and it would have to be a solo operation getting the top off. OH well one day. lol.

A lil off topic. But I dont know if my top has ever been off. But being that its an 84. if I were to take the top off, would it be wise to replace the weather stripping. I dont have any issues right now, but just wondering.

thanks

That is possible as there are so few bolts left in the top now. Those would seem to be pointless bolts anyway so I won't replace them, but I plan on replacing all of the missing bolts.

I think we forgot to answer the man's question. If your looking for a spec then I can't answer, but there is alot of common sence in the answer. It's a fiberglass top so don't wrench down on it or you'll crack it. Just good and snug. If you want you can throw a water hose over it and if it leaks then just tighten it up in the approperate spot. Now I'm sure someone will come here and point out what I've said to be wrong but atleast it with hopefully answer your question.

You are both right. There are bolts in back that go up but they bolt to a centering pin. Your blazers must have rusted in to the holes because it should slide right off the pins.

One trick to bolting it down is to bolt the cab portion first. This helps prevent leaks in the front of the shell. When I first got mine it leaked there, and I figured I would need new weatherstripping. When I removed it, I rubbed the weatherstripping with some WD-40 then bolted the front down first, no more leaks.

thats what i do once and a while use some good old wd-40 and it keeps it from cracking. as a side note i cut the pins off of mine at the back (ever catch ass on one of them when u dont have the top on?) the weather striping holds up very well as mine is a 79 and still fine. and i take my top on and off all the time.

Well, not really. My 85 had 1 bolt each side that had to come out. The top had never been removed. I had to pull the interior panels back and take them out because the were hidden. They were not the pins, they are still there.

In fact here's the post...................................

I actually put all the bolt's back in after each summer. I just give a decent umf with a ratchet.

I have the top (and doors) on my '79 on and off all the time and it doesn't leak. I only have about 5 bolts left where the cage nut isn't missing or slid out of sight and gotten wedged!

As for tightness, "umph" is a great term... just don't crack the fiberglass.

If you've got any place you can put some eye bolts into rafters or beams or whatever, the top can be a one-person job... I back under the carport, unbolt the thing and then lift one corner at a time, attaching a chain (I use a carabeener on the roof rack that's on my top) to each corner. When you're done, the whole top is hanging maybe an inch up off the truck and you just drive out from under it. You can even still park there if you just back in...

i like that idea, of course i dont have a roof rack on top of mine but i could probly make some sort of sling that i could lift the top off with. hum maybe a hand winch attached to the wall and a couple pullys:D got my wheels turning now.
