so I have a 1982 k5 I got from my grandpa and I might have to replace the Torque converter. I got a good ol 350 SBCw a TH700r4 transmission and I remember someone mentioning that I might have a "high-stall" torque converter. Is there any type of special converter I should be looking for or am I thinking too hard ? Is the converter engine specific or transmission specific? Please help. Thank you.

Don't buy a high stall converter. Higher stall converters are needed with high duration cams. Like when building a car for drag racing. I made the mistake of putting a too high of stall converter in my 89 when I built it and it was no good for crawling or towing the boat. Just got the trans temps way too high

Well actually my grandpa told me that I had a high performance street cam. I always felt like the truck was made for flying down the strip. So does that mean I need to confirm what kind of cam I have And the kind of torque my engine would be Pushing?

Why did they mention that? How does it drive? If there's too much slip when you drive, it can be swapped, but it's pretty much personal preference and not mandatory. Generally you pick a stall speed based on the engine power band. If it is high, you need to look out for hot transmission, especially in overdrive. When the torque converter clutch is locked, the stall speed is irrelevant.

lets start over...what is it doing that makes you think you need to replace the torque converter?
