i was wondering what stall converter i should get for my 86 k5 with a 454 700r4 and 38 inch tires truck is used for cursing and some off roading

as low a stall as possible.

you use your truck for cursing? seems to be a common trend when working on one of these.. lol welcome aboard

3.73's with 38" tires? That gives you an effective gear ratio of 2.94 That thing will be a total dog even with a BBC and probably kill the tranny and overdrive fast, you gotta re-gear first! 4.88's would be ideal with 38's bring you to an effective gear ratio of 3.85 making it snappy off the line with a nice low RPM when cruising on the highway like it would with stock sized tires.

Now because you took the strain off the transmission with new gears, you can have a slightly higher stall torque converter for when you want hard/fast launches yet it wont slip much at cruising speeds. A 1700 to 2000 rpm stall TC would be perfect if you dont plan on doing any towing. You'll probably be able to break the 38" tires loose from a dead stop. If you do want to tow, then a stock SBC TC (1300-1500 stall) would be great behind your BBC and still have spirited launches.

Low stall TC's are for old boring people who drive like grandma going to church :D

There's no reason for a higher than stock stall unless you have a hot cam.

And you will not get acceptable results with any torque converter until you have appropriate differential gears, as was said above.

For your calculations, my 454/th400/4.11/39.5" TSL cruises at about 2200-2300rpm at 55/60mph. Stock OEM convertor, and figure in some slip (5%?) as it is not a 100% lock-up convertor.

Wait, big block, 700R-4, 38's and 4.88's? I can't possibly think of where the weak point in that drivetrain would be...

So with a 700r4....4.88 gears x OD .7 = roughly a 3.591 gear. With your 38" tire that is still some very low rpms (1500?) even for a big block.

1850 rpm at 60 mph...

5.13's would be better, 5.38's would be better stiil. 2000 rpm at 60 mph, the tranny might live.
