what are the symptoms of a bad torque converter??? it is a 90 ford f-150...the truck will not start in park but will crank up in nuetral..then when it is put into gear it just dies , kinda like letting out on a clutch without giving it any gas....just lunges a little and dies....could it be that the insides came apart in the torque converter? it was running fine when he left my house today , then got about 30 miles away and stopped for a red light and it just died on him

Torque converter is bad, usually you don't go anywhere.

I know on the *GM* vehicles certain years (my sisters old '88 Beretta for instance) the TCC solenoid would fail after prolonged freeway driving, and not disengage. It would act like a clutch, so you'd have to start it in neutral, floor it, and drop it into drive. Fairly easy fix, but I can't say that Ford is setup the same way.

My first thought also was a TCC solenoid. I don't know if ford did that like GM though either so maybe have him call a trans shop on monday and ask.

Check into seeing if you can disconnect the wiring SOLELY for the TCC.

GM you could do that before the transmission went fully electronic. If you disconnected the plug, and the problem went away, you KNEW it was TCC. That of course assumes that the TCC was failing at higher temperatures (which was the common failure mode) and not just stuck, in which case unplugging the solenoid would do nothing.

will do ..i,ve never worked on a ford that much ..but i seem to remember having an 88 beretta that i unplugged thee tcc solenoid on ....where would it be on the ford f150 and what is involved in replacing it if that is the problem?

Sorry, I stay far away from Ford's. Hopefully someone here can help you.

Another option is check autozone's website and see if they've got enough of the wiring diagrams online to see if you can decipher what's going on for TCC.

Do you know if those transmissions are completely computer controlled? If they are, you are probably SOL in regards to just unplugging the TCC.

yeah i try to stay away from them too , i guess i'm gonna go get it off the side of the road and bring it to the house and see what i can find out about it.......thanks guys

i dont know a lot about fords , so if you could help me diagnose it.....i sure would appreciate it and it is a 1990 ford f 150 , 5.0 ltr , 2 wheel drive with a AOD/AODE tranny......when i went and picked it up off of the side of the road , it would only crank up in nuetral and actually run.......if you tried to crank it in park it would turn over but would not fire up........when i put it in nuetral and started it i had to feather the gas pedal to keep it running as it would not get above 1000 rpms for a minute or so.......when i got it to where it would run on its own (in nuetral) i reved it up and dropped it down into drive and hit the gas.........made it halfway up the ramps on the dolley and it got to where it would not go above 1000 rpms again even with the gas pedal to the floor!! i let it roll back down the ramps , put it in nuetral and fired it back up ........put it in drive.......no noise ...no jerking.......pulled right up on the dolly whent through all the gears and no problem!! i removed the driveshaft to tow it home , got in the yard and unloaded it ...........cranks right up and shifts through all gears with no problem........(without the driveshaft in it)..........i am confused ......help please.sorry to post a problem about a ford on here but i tried the ford forums and they are not very willing to help out.....no where near as cool and nice as you guys have been to me , i'm just trying to help a buddy out.cant turn him down just cuz he drives a ford .....lol

Sounds exactly like the TCC in the GM's. Hot it acts up, cooled off it works fine. Did the autozone wiriing diagrams help at all?

Heck, TCC is USUALLY so basic that maybe even the Haynes would cover it.

Your local library able to get copies of service manuals for vehicles?

just put the driveshaft back in...checked the tv cable it is still attached.no od button on the shift lever. cranked it up runs great , fluid is not burnt , at the proper level , changes back and forth between gears and moves in forward and reverse....took it down the road , at 55 mph the tach is reading 3200 to 3400 rpm sound like it is not in the proper gear, then after driving it fore a few minutes the tach started to fluctuate between 2000 and 3200 rpm, while it was fluctuating if i hit the gas pedal it was just like it was in nuetral.....pulled over and turned around and it went back to running ok with the exeption of running such a high rpm at 55 mph.......help i am lost, i am thinking maybe OD went out and was causing the problem but i dont know for sure
