Do they go bad, I'm swapping in my new tranny this weekend and I'm wondering if I should get a new one or am I just being paranoid? Failure of the old one was from cracking the case the tranny had been operating fine

Would depend on the miles for me alot of miles or was the other one rebuilt recently it is alot easier to do now. They do go bad but its not very common but if its like the original one for the original trans then yeah replace it.

Well then its a toss up, guess it would depend on finances haven't bought one in awhile so I have no idea of the cost.

That T350 you should be able to get a good unit for less than 150$. I think you just cracked the case right? No metal floating around in the fluid right? Knowing that it was working fine before the incident I would proceed as follows.
If the fluid is suspect at all, trash it. You can empty out the fluid in the convertor and filter it with a paint filter, or even an old clean white tshirt, to see if there is any debris at all. If you can rotate the inner splines in one direction, but not the other, and physically it looks good, i.e. the front seal mating surface, the tangs on the pump engagement, and no physical deformities of the body, I would run it again.
Be sure to add a quart of fluid to it before installation.

I personally would NEVER use an old convertor with a new/rebuilt trans. People will say otherwise but IMO it is better to be safe than sorry and for the cost of a rebuilt convertor (about 80.00-125.00) I consider that cheap insurance.

Yeah, I agree,,,,,you have the trans out already,,,,it just makes sense to go the extra coin now and do it right.....If the converter is worn or has trash in it...it may damage the replacement trans and you will be back to square one...

Where do you buy a good th350 tq for 80-125? I need one to finish my 73 and im gettin my first paycheck soon :woot:. And are those cheap ones good for 400 horseys?

In a non lockup converter such as yours a rebuild is more or less a cut open, inspect , and weld it backtogether affair, if no damage has occured for a converter remanufacter. Thats why if you can get with a reman company you will find a converter for a th350 or th400 is generally between 35-50 bucks. In the old days alot of folks used to drill a hole in the converter , drain it flush it with solvent and instal a threaded plug, then balance it and that was it. But id go ahead and try and get in touch with a reman company directly. Our supplier sells directly to the public, and im sure they aint the only ones.

Also call Shift Management Inc up here in Sacramento.
I was getting the TC under $100 and one time after I bought one and wanted to swap the tranny to another vehicle after a year of use I went to them with it, and they said, let us cut it open, see what happened in the past year then we close it up and balance it for you.
They did that for free, and there was one tab that was starting to crack they fixed that too.
And they said thank you for your business.:thumb:
I also have bought rebuilt th400 from them for my diesel.
They are the suppliers for autozone and Kragen and most auto parts warehouses.

I just got off the phone with my buddy and I can get you a convertor for $50.00, he just needs a days notice for him to order it in.

Yeah, I would go with that for sure, hey Scott, does he ship?

Thats one hell of a deal. Is there anything special i or he should know about this whole thing. I kinda skimmed over some info on TQ's and theres different stalls and lock ups and different tq's for different bolt patterns and it just got my head turning real quick. All i really wanna do is occassional towing and more commonly DD use. I think i might be overcomplicating this :dunno:. Set up is a 350/th350/203

I just asked him for a convertor for a TH350, assuming you don't have a lock-up TH350 then you'll be ok. This is for a stock convertor which has a stall speedo in the 1500 range which is what you want for a DD/wheeler.
