Don't try to use a ft-lbs torque wrench unless you have one that is designed for only the very small torque amounts. (if they make such a thing)
An in-lbs wrench would probably do the job. From my experience, a ft-lbs wrench is nowhere near accurate at the low end and will easily strip aluminum threads.
12ft-lbs is nothing, I use a socket wrench and grasp it around the head, and tighten that way. Not enough leverage to do harm if you don't go ape on it.
