Today, I was pressing the u-joints out of the axle shafts on my D60 project, and in a moment of severe brain fade, I pinched the U-shaped end of the shaft together a little... maybe 1/4 or 3/8". Is it safe to simply straighten it, or did I just cost myself a couple bills?

Based on the plans in your sig, I'd get a new one. Try to straighten your old one out for a spare, maybe.

If it was an outer, sounds like a good excuse for 35-splines.

They get squeezed together all the time. I regularly have to spread them back apart to get the clips back in.

Already have 35sp stubs going in as part of the DynaTrac kit. ;)

I think I'm going to give a shot at just straightening it. As long as I can square it up without heat or much trouble, I think I'll just run it. Maybe upgrade later.

My first thought was a porta-power with the 'duckbill' attachment... otherwise, I may have to build a bit of a jig to press through the other side. I may just go the second route, so as to not touch the side that's still straight.

I've put one driveshaft "ear" in the vise and pulled gently to straighten one out that the press bent inwards slightly more than once..also used a chisel on the inside edge when an inside clip groove was still partially obscured by the "ear"to drive it back into alignment.....I'd say as long as it doenst crack it should live..
