i am looking to get a tow rig/dd /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif and could use some input. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif I am looking for a Crew Cab with a SB or a Diesel, I was also thinking Burb, but i think i want a Bed.
Has any towed their rigs with a 5.7 GM or a 5.4 Ford or the bigger SB Dodge (non Himi $$$)?
The reason for the SB is the Wife would like the the truck to get around 15-20 MPG in the HW.

Thanks!

Brett

Re: Tow Rig/DD

only thing that MIGHT get that kind of MPG is Deisels. Your talking heavy trucks. with a 350 and a 4l60 you might get 15 empty proably more like 11 for typical DD. You will be 10mpg or less towing. I have a 454 Burb and it get's 10 empty (88 with TH 400). THe funny thing is it got almost 9mpg towing 8k on a trailer hwy.
Now the Diesel hwy you might get 18 mpg with a 4l60. I personnaly didn't care fo the GM deisels before the Durmax and that's why I went with a 454.

Re: Tow Rig/DD

I know where there's a quad cab, swb cummins HO 6 speed that gets 20mpg unloaded on the hwy and 14 to 16 pulling a K5 on a trailer. Only 33K miles and only asking 23K for the truck. Just my input. haha /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Re: Tow Rig/DD

i tow with my 94 burb with a 350. i get 14 everyday to work and about 10 towing. i wish i had the vortec heads cause the power sucks with my beast behind me but it's not bad.

Re: Tow Rig/DD

My towrig/DD is an 86 k20 with a TBI 454 Nv4500 4.10's and 315-70-16 Bfg mt's I get about 14-16empty Hwy I've gotten as good as 17.5 on my way to San Antonio .about 12 towing in town I get about 6-10 (Heavy right foot) overdrive and big tires are nice to have

Re: Tow Rig/DD

I am looking in the > $13000 range, want to pay for it in cash, and after we trade the wifes 2dr honda in and get a new 4 dr somthing i think i will just have about $13000 so send on a new ride.

Re: Tow Rig/DD

I get 13-15 towing my truggy (approx 14,000 GVW) and around 17-19 normal driving (heavy foot) with 20-21 highway if I stay below 65. That's with 33" ATs on a Crew Cab DMax 4x4...

Re: Tow Rig/DD

I had a 99 F250 extra cab with a 5.4.It was a nice truck, nice ride, decent mileage towing or not.It towed my truck and trailer ok but it strugled a bit on hills.

I got rid of it (and a $400 a month payment)and picked up a 94 F250 4x4 extra cab long bed with a 460 and a 5 spd.I dont git as good of milage (between 9 and 13mpg)with it but I paid $6000 cash for it and it will pull anything no problem /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Tow Rig/DD

I would go look for and Older Dodge 3/4 ton with either the 12 or 24 Valve Cummins. Im not sure if you could get a newer one for $13000, but that is one helluva downpayment /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Tow Rig/DD

I have a F350 Diesel Crew cab long bed. Daily driver/tow rig
I get about 20mpg empty and about 15mpg towing my 6,800lbs
boat about 85mph.
I hate to say this but I have always been a Chevy person till
I bought my first Powerstroke on my second one and will never go back to Chevy /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I still love my K5 for wheeling but the Ford has it all. I have two freinds that have the Duramax and not one of them can keep up with me towing the boats or 4wheelers.

Re: Tow Rig/DD

I pulled home a '77 1-ton on a 16' car trailer with my Ram 1500 with the 360, auto, and 4.10 gears (stock tires). I didn't tackle many hills but it seemed to have sufficient power and handled pretty good with a weight distributing hitch. However, it only gets about 12-13 empty and no idea what it got towing.

As soon as I sell off some projects I will be in the exact same boat. I am looking at Dodge quad cabs w/ the cummins motors. For $13,000 you're looking at between 80,000 and 120,000 miles (less if its 2wd) but that's just getting broken in. Good gas mileage and a great motor -- plus it will tow anything. I am willing to bet that my cummins will outlast the navistar in the longevity department too. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
