me and my friend may be getting a boat and we both want to tow it. he would use a normal ball off a cherokee or bronco, but im stuck with the pintle hook on my m1008 cucv. a normal civy class 3 wont hook up to it because of the way the pintle hook and d rings mount to the frame. one option would be to have someone custom make me a hitch, and i think for my area that may be hard to find. the next option is a pintle with a ball integrated into it, but i wanna try to keep the truck original. the third option is to moddify the connecter on the trailer to accept a pintle hook. i favor this option because id rather switch the trailer back and forth from ball to pintle, but is it possible? id be towing it most of the time. thanks

Why not just pickup a pintle hook with the ball incorporated like you said so you can tow both? Noones making you throw the original hook out ya know?

My friend tows everything from car trailers to landscaping trailers with a pintle/ball combo.

Replace the trailer side with a pintle loop and have your buddy get the pintle hook for a 2" reciever. Just sayin................:dunno:

Find and make the hitch like I did. I can tow military or pintle loop stuff AND use regular ball hitches.

The problem with the pintle hitches that have a ball as the lower jaw is that it'd be pretty high up in the air for most civilan trailers. Then there's also the fact that all of them I've seen are 2". No good if you have a 1-7/8" hitch.
Just going with a pintle means you'd never be able to just hook up to and tow away a friend's random trailer or something.

I considered all of this before going with my custom made hitch. It cost more and wasn't as easy but I'm glad I did it.

Is it the same type as our CUCV's have or the "4 bolt" type most have?

Ours are a bit different than the ones you find at Tractor Supply etc due to them being able to spin around their center.

yeah, a nice poster gave me a link to one he just bought and stays it bolted right up, i used 2 day shipping and it still wont get here till thursday, effin crazy
on steel soldiers i meant

Gotcha. Put pics up here when you get it done. I don't visit there much anymore.

just saw this thread, would have posted pics of mine. Someone swapped before i bought the truck, it dosnt have the military pintle setup. Looks like they unbolted the pintle hook, and bolted on a pintle ball. dunno what size. but it dosnt latch which kinda annoys me. the ball seems to be a bit too big.

We used Ball pintles on everything at SDVT-1 in Hawaii. All boats, SDVs, trailers. If it was a tag it had a ring on it. Work great, never need to wonder "Do I have the right hitch?".

You'd be surprised. With the 34.5" tall 36's I had on before there was no chance with my trailer. Thing was definitely nose high.
