Been considering buying an RV and want to bring my car with me. I know that Flat towing makes hookup much quicker/easier. Unhooking esp if you get into a tight spot. But really beats your car and wears on it. Trailer looks much nicer on the car, but makes the RV longer when you go someplace and may be tricker if you jammed up someplace.

Those of you that have RV's and bring a car along - what's been your experiences?

Oh, and I'm looking at buying used - either a large class C or a small class A - something 28-34' maybe.

What kind of car? I've only flat towed smaller cars personally.

Don't forget, a trailer will add another ~2000lbs, to a possibly already under powered RV.

This isn't going to really help, but I went through all this back in the day. I eventually landed on a suburban towing a trailer. Only one engine and drivetrain i had to maintain, no issues backing up and such, and I could set up camp, level the trailer, then explore around in the 'burb.

For me, it just seemed easier. That said, I'd rather figure out how to flat tow the car than have to load it and unload it from a trailer all the time. And a car hauler would be kind of a PITA in lots of campgrounds, unless you could get nice pull through spots.

research the towed vehicle first and formost .

lots of late model stuff do NOT like flat tow .

maybe even just a simple tow dolley as much as I don't like them .

Yeah, I'm not sure if my car would even like being flat towed - kinda leaning towards doubtful. Pontiac G8 GT.

I've been leaning towards having a trailer - even though it will be more cumbersome. But I could also use it to possibly haul my Jimmy around. As far as an RV, I'd be looking for a diesel, it is harder to find small diesels but not impossible. I don't believe I'd be underpowered. Just didn't know how big of an issue it would be fitting a trailer behind an rv in tight spots.

I recommend using a tow dolly with that car. Back wheels drag down the road as if it was driving. No wear and tear on the drive train. A car dolly can be moved by hand once you get where you are going. A trailer will need the RV to move it.

One thing you figure out with a RV is, where can I put it? You will find you seek out the places to not get bound up.

G8 is rwd. Car will get too beat up, pretty decided to keep it up on a car hauler trailer, anything else will just abuse it.

I'd buy a little saturn to flat tow before I tried using a trailer. That's going to be an inconvenience in every which way.

Edit- I have a tow bar setup for a Saturn sitting in my garage that you can have.

I have 5 cars at my house, which is far too many. May need to cull the herd at some point. Hoa doesn't give me shit.

I thought they were FWD. Learn somethingnew every day.
G8's are Holden made. Based on the Commodore - LS engine 6l80e. Share platform w/ Camaro.

Me and my dad covered several hundred miles in a 90's 3/4 ton 4wd Ford with a slide in camper and flat towing a Jeep YJ Wrangler. Put the Jeep's transfer case in neutral, and leave the key in it to keep the steering lock off, and it was fine.
