Hey guys I just got a flat bed truck. Its a 2wd dually, 454, 4spd. The flat bed is currently about 10ft long. It needs rebuilt I can get steel for fairly cheap and was going to build a trailer, well now it doesn't look like I will be able to build a trailer. would it be a dumb idea to rebuild the flat bed long enough to haul my blazer. No long trips, probably at most 50 miles one way. I would need to extend the flat bed at least 4 ft would be better if I did 5 ft.

The question I have is if the truck will handle it. I figure the flat bed will be pretty heavy. The door panel says the max load at the rear axle is 7200 lbs. It is a 160" wheel base right now, the rear tires would be at about the 7ft mark on the flat bed. Moving them is an option too.

Over all I think I would add 2ft to the bed and a 3 ft dovetail

It can be done, but to do it properly you will need to extend the frame and the wheelbase to properly distribute the load over both axles. Also weigh the truck and the blazer and make sure the total of the two plus you and your stuff won't exceed the GVW of the truck.
