Towing Question - Lets talk RPM's, Tire sizes and gear ratios

Re: Towing Question - Lets talk RPM\'s, Tire sizes and gear ratios

I tow my Firebird with my Burb in OD. 700r4. I tow it with the 35s on it, and it has 4.56 gears. The car and trailer are over 4,000 lbs, and it doesnt even come out of lock-up most of the time. If you are heading up a hill, then kick it in drive. You can tow in OD if you use common sense.

One thing no one has mentioned is how stout is your engine? Do you feel like it has the guts to tow something around 2200 rpm? (I'm assuming yes)

Contrary to popular belief, you can tow with a 700R4 in OD. Your main enemy will be heat, generated from slippage of the torque convertor as well as gear-hunting, downshifting from OD to 3rd and back up again.

Since I'm too lazy to figure out how to do the link thingie, this is shamelessly copied from an earlier post. You can search for the thread called 700R4 verses 4L60E

If I understand correctly the problem with towing in OD is twofold: First the locking and unlocking of the torque convertor creating excess heat in the fluid as it hunts for the right gear under load, on hills, etc, and secondly, the transmission pump also running 30% slower wgile in 4th, also contributing to cooling problems.

I bought my 700 from a guy who used to use it to pull his sleds out to Vailmont every weekend. He worked in a 4wd shop in Edmonton and rebuilt it yearly himself with the good stuff, including a brazed torque convertor. He finally went to a NV4500 when he started towing a 5th wheel, so I got the 700.

Now here's the question part:

The way my trans is wired/plumbed is that the torque convertor only locks up in 4th and doesn't unlock (constant power). It's switched, so if I want to unlock it on a short hill, I can unlock the convertor for a minute or two to keep the revs a little higher to the top of the hill and then lock it back up. With 4.56 gears and 35's highway revs seem high enough to keep the pump happy enough and it has a motorhome-sized tranny cooler on it and a temp sensor in the pan to keep an eye on it.

First of all, your explanation of why the 700 builds up heat is bang on. It looks like you've done your research, and that's half the battle.

Your setup is a little different than mine. My converter locks up in D and not in OD. I assume your rig has an aftermarket lockup kit....

I NEVER tow in OD because the tranny shop that rebuilt my 700 7 years ago told me not to do it. I've also seen many older company trucks blow their trannies(700s as well) because green guys would tow in OD. I run a huge cooler but I don't have a tranny gauge so I can't really tell what my temps are. Let's just say that my 700 has survived many a pull up some of the worst passes in North America- I guess I'm doing something right!!!!

Since your truck is equipped with an ATF temp gauge, I would recommend trying towing in OD and keeping a close eye on your gauge. You'll be able to tell right away if the tranny likes it or not. I agree that 35s and 4.56s will probably help you out a bit.

Just out of curiousity, how much weight are you planning on pulling behind the K5? The general concensus around here is no more than 5500 lbs, and that's if you are using a weight distribution/anti-sway hitch setup, along with a good quality brake controller. If you need any info on any of those, feel free to PM me, brother.

700R4 verses 4L60E

I would tow with my 700 in OD as long as you can monitor trans temp, prevent the up and downshifting and keep the convertor locked. I should have mine in town early next week if you want to take a look.

Re: Towing Question - Lets talk RPM\'s, Tire sizes and gear ratios

I've towed with my wife's 98 GMC Jimmy that has 3.73's, 4L60E, 4.3 engine and 31" tires. You hit the nail on the head when you said "if you use common sense". I use OD with very light throttle and shift into 3rd at the first sign of the engine starting to work very hard.

Re: Towing Question - Lets talk RPM\'s, Tire sizes and gear ratios

I tow a 17" camper around 4000 lbs. I am running 36" hummer tires. I had a 700R4 and replaced it with a TH400. Excellent upgrade. The 700R4 had to be run in D, not ND. I seem to get better gas mil /forums/images/graemlins/burb.gifeage & better overall performance with the TH400. Anyway, just my $0.02.

TH350 - 3213 RPM with 31" tires
700R4 - 2249 RPM with 31" tires
TH350 - 3018 RPM with 33" tires

too bad a stock 700R4 cant handle that for very long, you need a TH400, a 700R4 will poop out after long if you work it so be carefull /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Towing Question - Lets talk RPM\'s, Tire sizes and gear ratios

Gee if you just used the 465 you had it would live just fine!!! The 700R4/4L60/4L60E would work if its built, Never ever tow in over drive, Unless its a NV4500 or a 4l80E/4L85E you can get a fuelinjection wirinng kit that will control the 4L60E or the 4L80/4L85E The 203 with a 32 spline female inputgear can be bolted up to any round pattern trany(4L60/4L80/NV4500) per ORD's page with some work. As you know I have towed many miles with a 465 or the NV4500 with 33 or 35, It works but its not fun and the higer the truck got the less fun it was, It was never a power problem but then it never has been, To make this work you will have to go with a 350 or 400 or more, that makes it power in the bottom to mid not at the top.

Re: Towing Question - Lets talk RPM\'s, Tire sizes and gear ratios

That's not a super heavy trailer but from towing my parent's boat with my K5, I think you can pretty much rule out using OD for much other than coasting down hill. Typically more RPM is better than less, not a lot of motors are real happy chugging along at 2200 rpm with a load. Mine had 255/85's, 3/4T axles, 3" lift, 4.56's gears, 700/208, standard hitch, RS9000's on 5, relatively stiff custom rear springs, and the 383 was built to run pretty happy at 2500 and up. I could tow the boat easily up to 70mph without stability problems and I just ran in 3rd gear the majority of the time. That TH700 is still in my K5, so I obviously have no problems with using a TH700 if that's what will work for you.

Re: Towing Question - Lets talk RPM\'s, Tire sizes and gear ratios

You a have 4500, now I am jealous. PM with some of the details of the swap.

Re: Towing Question - Lets talk RPM\'s, Tire sizes and gear ratios

I would use the 700 and at the first hint of hill downshift to direct
3000 rpm will become real old on the highway IMO
