I hate 6.5's . When you start them they sound like a piston is gonna fly out the side of the fender. But I have no other imput.
Gee, thanks for being helpful

What vehicle is doing the towing (i.e. NA or turbo, tranny, rear gears) and how much weight is being towed, and how far?

Personally, I wouldn't tow a lot of weight with ANY diesel unless I had an EGT gauge. Many a person has cooked many a diesel (of various makes) by prolonged excessive EGT's while pulling a grade. When you install one, put it ahead (on the inlet side) of the turbo if turbocharged, or in one of the manifolds right before the headpipe if NA. Max intermittent temp is 1250 degrees F, and max continuous temp is 1000 degrees F. Keep the coolant temp under 220 - 210 or less is preferable.

A tranny temp gauge isn't a bad idea either...

It'll tow about the same accelerating and hill pulling speed as your 460 in your F350, if it's in really good shape and tuned well. The difference will be that you'll get double the fuel mileage and pay a little less per gallon for diesel, currently.

If you do get into the high country, say 3,500ft or so and above, the 6.5 may start to walk away from your 460 truck. The higher the elevation, the more advantage the 6.5TD will have.

My cousin had a 6.5 turbo 3500 dually shortly after they came out, which replaced basically the same truck but with a TBI 454. The 6.5 towed slightly better than the 454, but got twice the fuel economy. He was towing a very large gooseneck trailer with a backhoe on it.

anyone have any experiance??

Yeah it sucks!!!
I would rather have a 454 atleast then you can pass people when you want.

Im comparing a 98 crewcab 4x2 454 auto to a 2000 6.5 nv4500

My mileage empty was better with the 454
My mileage loaded is the same or worse with the sick5

My loads vary from 1500lbs to 16000lbs.
