I have simple question. I am planning on getting an RV and will be towing my K5 behind it. Does the transfer case in the 1984 K5 700R4 lubricate well enough to tow it on the ground or do I need to drop the rear driveshaft?

Most of the owners manuals state if your going further than 50 miles or over 35 mph,its best to remove the driveshaft...

I cant say I've seen it happen, after seeing many trucks get hauled into the junkyard from longer distances at higher speeds, but I dont doubt the transfer case and rear output shaft bushing the driveshaft slip yoke rides on will eventually overheat from lack of lube, and you know what happens next!..

Its only 4 bolts to take off at the diff and strap up the shaft to the chassis..better safe than sorry..

if me have a 7/16 wrench / small pry bar / good beefy bungy cord / roll electrical tape for joint caps . be safe and pop the shaft off the axle end and bungy it up to the frame good n snug.

if you wana pull it out then your going to need a extra slip yoke for that vehicle and bungy to hold it in the tcase so the atf fluid in the case wont leak out.

A "C" clamp or those welders vise grips also work well to hold the caps on the u-joint while your removing it and tying it up out of the way..

thanks

Thats what I wanted to know. It is not a big deal to disconnect the shaft. I just didnt want to think it was necessary if it wasn't. Change of plans anyway. Wont be towing after all.
