Holley has a TPS kit thats able to hook to any of their carbs apparently. Anybody tried this?? Says you can hook up a 4l60 or 4l80 up to it??

I was just thinking that when I wanna do up my tranny, maybe get a holley and 4l80E?? Would this all work for it. Or just rebuild the 700R4 best I can and go with that??

Sounds like a cool idea for someone thats not very good with electronics and doesnt wanna mess with tbi to get a strong tranny that has OD.

Whats your thoughts??

Keep it simple...

The way you use your truck, tire size, no lift, etc. Does not require a 4L80E. Build the 700R4 properly, use a good cooler, and it will last you a good long time.

Putting a 4L80 in your truck will require new d-shafts front and rear, stand alone control unit, the afforementioned TPS, added wiring, maybe more.

Well you see eveebody else wheels their trucks, breaks stuff then puts bigger parts in. I want to lift it, run bigger tires and such and wheel it hard, but first i want a drivetrain that can handle it so i dont have to do it later. Id rather have a mechanically strong truck before i mess with making it look and perform better offroad. It was just something i was thinking about. I want a strong tranny that i dont have to worry about handling upgrades i want, but i also want OD so i can still drive it Comfortably.

I thought you were gonna keep it mostly stock...

I'd still keep a 700R4. Built and cooled properly of course.

Something heavier than a K5 would require a 4L80. Like a Burb, 3/4 or larger p/u, something that tows or hauls significant weight. But a K5 with a 400 that might see 35" tires... overkill. More trouble than it's worth in such a lighter weight truck.

Ok now what about a 4L60E? Should be compatable with driveshafts apart from spine count. I love the way the one in the vandura shifts, and would be a nice way to stop with the whole tv cable business. And as far as keeping it stock we shal see. I will for awhile on account im short on funds and would rather build the drivetrain before lift and tires, but eventually i want 4" and 33s or 6" and 35s(my favorite)

Well, now you're just talkin' crazy.

A 4L60E is a 700R4 (essentially) just with a computer controlled valve body. So, it will need a stand alone control unit if you plan to keep the 400 you just built. Only way I would change to an E trans is if I swapped to an LS engine. That way the engine/trans can be controlled together and work together as the factory designed. Other than that, I'll work with a simple TV cable adjustment. Set it and forget it. Done.

True true,i knew they were pretty much the same i just didnt know what all it would take to swap somethin in. Thanks man. Rebuild the 700 it is:thumb:

what he said... or go mvb and have no tv at all...

I'm not convinced on a 4L80 being the best route all the time.. obviously an LS swap is another story... I know Heath loves em and has mentioned some low prices, but from what I've seen, a stock rebuilt 4l80 with a controller would cost the same or more than a serious beef 700...

I'm gonna throw a fair amount of power at mine and flog it on 38's, and I think a properly cooled stage 3 rmvb BTO unit will hold up fine... famous last words of course... :haha:

85? definitely would be looking for a slightly newer one tho, I think 87 is the swapover year for the upgraded ones iirc...

Yah the trannys an 86, or so the code says on the side, right before the transition. Thanks for the help:thumb:
