I put my 12 bolt rear axle with 3:08 gears and new brakes for sale/trade on craigslist. Someone contacted me wanting to trade their AAM from a 2003 silverado HD with 4:10 gears for my 12 bolt. I don't know much about that axle, is it a good trade? I am assuming that it is very heavy and doesn't have much clearance. Not even sure about locker availability.
For my front I have a Dana 44 (3/4 ton, 4:10 gears, chromoly axles, reid racing knuckles).

it's worth a lot more than the 12 bolt you have. Some have a factory locker (Gov lock IIRC). Yes it's a much heavier, full float axle.

^Yep. If it's in good order, the worst that could happen is that you sell it for a profit, and 10/12 bolts with smog gears you can't hardly give away.

Gonna be strong as hell and will have discs. If you use it you'll probably need to change the MC to a later one so the rear discs have enough fluid.

1. It is likely wider than your front axle.

2. Sounds too good to be true. I mean, why would someone want to trade an axle that is basically worth scrap iron for one that is worth $600+.

He is wanting my axle for his k5 build. He bought the 2003 HD for the engine and transmission, parting the rest out. Seems like a win win for the both of us

If it pans out, I would agree with you.

Take your width measurements with you. You may or may not be happy with the width.

Edit - didn't see the above post. FWIW, I gained a couple of WMS inches when I did my suburban's axle swap. Perhaps I am easily pleased, but I have yet to notice the difference, and it still turns more tightly than my K10 does.

The real question is why on earth would someone use 03 Silverado engine and tranny and then settle for such a POS as a 12 bolt? Especially when they have the superior in every way 11.5 already.

If he wanting to trade a busted ass axle for a good one..
