I went wheeling in my 71 k5 this weekend at Uwharrie National Forest. Hit a rock and cracked the yoke form my corporate 14 rear, yoke on my rear drive shaft, broke my rear shock, and busted the radiator. I'm going to have the front and rear drivesahfts rebuilt and would love input on what size, what parts etc. I am running a cummins 5.9, NV4500 trans, NP205 transfer case, Dana 60 front, corporate 14 rear. I will post pictures in the morning. Would love to hear ideas.

:sign6: and people say Uwharrie is weak!

We need to know other specs like lift, tires, gears etc.

Guess pinion guard is on my list since I want to go there by the end of Sept!

Also need to know the amount of throttle used to kill said parts

1350 or 1410 joints. Change them every year

So as far as lift it is tricky. The truck was built when I bought it as far as the frame, motor, trans, transfer, and axles go. I have since redone about everything but there is no real height to base lift on. So it is always a guessing game on questions like that. The frame is from a 94 Dodge truck and has 1"body bucks at the factory GM body mount locations. There is a block welded on at the rear but I don't think that is a lift I think it is more of something to make the two compatible. I took a picture of the frame height off the ground is 26" and the body is 34" in the front and 32" in the rear. I have my ORI struts pumped up higher in the front for tire clearance. Eventually I plan to do something with the rear suspension and will get it up a few inches then to match the front.

As far as throttle goes to much apparently. if you look at the picture of my front driveshaft angle it isn't good. I am going to play with the four link today to try and remedy that. Also my trans mount isn't beefy enough apparently because it crushed down. I'm saying all this because I was trying to do to much saturday in 2wheel drive. which caused me to not patiently crawl up the hill and take my time in the turn. I'm sure I wouldn't have tore all of it apart if I had been more in a crawl instead of just powering up. but the Cummins puts out some much torque that even in a crawling situation I think some of this would have broke. I know that my technique could have been better but I think it is clear some of the thinks in my driveline just aren't sized right for the power and weight I'm putting out.

I bought a new trans mount yesterday at Oreillys. but it isn't strong enough. Apparently it is out of a 95 chevy 2500 by their computer. yesterday to give me a little better angle on my front driveshaft which I was using to drive myself home I put a wood block in the void to keep it from smashing. This is temporary and I would love suggestions on way to strengthen this up.

Looks like it's time for a yoke guard......Which trail did it happen on?

I believe it was Dutch John where it has an S curve that climbs a hill. Honestly though Im not sure exactly.

More than likely the ledge right in the middle of climb is what got you? If it's the trail right below Kodak. Since it's time for new shafts and yokes, might as well go with 1350s. Are all your mount made from the same material?

Are all what mounts made of the same material? The trans mount was purchased from oriellys

my driveshafts have ford Dana 60 front axle yokes on each end that bolts up to the transfer case. lets you use 1350 joints, The yokes are way more beefy and they have more radius/clearance for the u-joints when the suspension cycles. It also ment I didn't need a CV on my rear shaft .

Post a picture of the whole truck if you don't mind. Think I have seen you riding around Charlotte. Us NC guys need to pick a date and go wheeling, I'm out at Uwharrie as much as I can be.

Not to derail this thread but I agree with 76k5 on getting a Uwharrie ride together I'm in Concord.

I spoke to High Angle Drivelines, gave him the info he needed and he built me an awesome set of prop shafts. Great service, great quality.
