Does anyone bother carrying spare wheel bearings/seals on the trail with them? I have amassed a bunch of spare stuff from my front end work that I can return or stash. I'm thinking it's probably not worth it but...

No , but thats not the point . If you ever break a stub or hub bad enough , you may need the bearings , maybe even a spindle .

I learned from my dad to always carry a set of bearings and a spindle if you can afford it. Carry spare hubs as well, if at all possible. When I put on the new Warns, the Spicers are going in the trail spare kit. The new bearings go in, the old bearings go into the spare kit. Can't tell you how many times I helped dad rebuild a front hub because of a stub shaft failure, usually miles from any type of help.

when I still drove mine I carryed spare bearings for one side of both axles. I learned that lesson the hard way and I wasn't wheeling. I took my truck in for inspection and the dumbass mechanic didn't put the rear back together right after checking the brakes. about 15 miles away the wheel, tire, axleshaft and hub assembly started sliding out. ruined both bearings and gouged the spindle.

now that I trailer it I have cut way back on what I bring with for a trip. no sense in hauling hundreds of pounds of spare parts around when I can just drag it up on the trailer and deal with it later.

What I have seen done is mounting a spindle complete w/ the bearings, rotor and hub, backing plae and lockout all as one unit. Just build a plate to bolt it to and throw your spare tire on it as your tire mount.

I carry one set of inner & outer wheel bearings and races for my 10b front. This way if I have a bearing seize I can replace it and get back to the trailer.

I only take spare drivelines, u-joints, stub shafts and hubs.

Of course a tool bag with only what you need.

I was thinking of doing that on the back of my rollbar... make a X and mount a setup up there..... but not sure if I want to block my rear window...

You'll have alot of crap to pick up if you want to carry all the stuff I do. :D I also carry a spare spindle incase I frag a stubshaft and crack a spindle or the bearings seize and screw up the spindle.

Here is the short list of just parts I carry:

Inner & outer wheel bearings & races
spindle
locking hub
TRE (all mine are the same)
axleshafts w/joints
driveshafts w/joints
steering box
stock pitman arm & draglink
front brakeline
10b pinion yoke
stock knuckles
ujoints (1350, S44, 1310)
alternator
starter solinoid
belts
cap, rotor, wires
main leaves F&R
.......

That doesn't include all the other stuff like TPI electrical parts, elec parts, bolts & hardware, ignition parts, tools, survival gear, welding supplies, etc. Trips of more then 1 day I usually have a 2nd spare tire & also a spare transfer case (208's are cheap).

I carry way to much crap :doah: but if something breaks I probably have the part or a way to fix it as you already know. Now that I have a towrig & trailer I will be leaving some of the bigger stuff like steering box, knuckles, etc on the trailer in a toolbox.

You could probably wheel a heck of a lot harder without an extra 1000lbs of spare parts in the back ;) Crap bro...a complete spare NP208?

Yep, that is why I am happy about having a trailer now. I can offload some of the bigger heavier crap on the trailer and be lighter, and I can always send someone back to the trailer for parts if I need to. I started out carrying so much stuff because I would drive my truck to and from the trails, and depending on the where the wheeling was that could be up to 200 miles away.

I only carry the 208 on long trips and leave it at camp. I don't wheel with it in the truck, but I bring it and the 2nd spare tire with me.

I can't really wheel the truck any harder then I already do cause I am not willing to do the mods necessary to take this truck to the next level of wheeling. The next step if full on truggy and would be beyond the point of no return. I plan to keep this truck street worthy and driveable yet still an pretty nasty wheeler.

hijack on

Has anyone used the vacuum sealer trick to carry bearings already greased? Put the bearing in a bag with grease in the center, and suck the air out which pulls the grease into the bearing, then seal it up. Wondering if it actually works, or if it is just a waste of time.

Hijack off

I would only carry that much stuff if I was going on a month long trip or moving...

I am glad there is a six states in moab. My wallet has lots of spare parts in it and it doesnt weigh a 1000 lb's.
