Trail spares

Depends on where I am going and for how long. Sometimes I just take a .50 cal ammo can full of tools and sometimes I take 800 lbs worth of stuff. One vehicle I had broke alot of aluminum t-cases so I carried a spare. I have carried a spare winch, alt, and battery too.

Spare winch? Sweet!!! I just need one winch, which I dont have.

On my last trip. I carried spare tierod, draglink, all fluids, sensors, plugs, wires and a Big tub of stuff. Seems whatever spares I bring, I break something I dont have!! You can fit a ton of stuff in the back of a burb.

Just trying to think of all the stuff to have so if I do break in Moab for BB next year I can fix it and keep wheeling...looks like a tranny will be on my list:whistle:

Sounds like you will well prepared by then. Lots of time to get things squared away. I am going next year, so I will have a ton of spares with me also.

Like others have said it obviously depends on where you're gong, how long and what type of weather you're headed into but here's a little list that might come in handy. I typed it up before our last trip and although some of it is way overkill you never know. Heck I used to NEVER carry valve stems but I bought some before this last trip out of the blue and you guessed it, I lost a bead and in the process ended up ruining the stem.
I pack the truck then go over the list and check stuff off or skip what I won't need for that trip. It's overkill but it helps me sleep at night. :)

wow, thats a good list..a few others

*sleeping bag
*duct tape
*automotive electrical wire
*bailing wire
*chain
*come along

My list varies, if I am close to home, don't worry about the the extras since it will be easy to go back. Far away, I pack like I am moving :D

Awesome list - one thing I also bring is starting fluid.

I also bring a spare fuel pump but I don't however, bring a spare alternator :)

Nice list. Ill have to put my own together. I carry alot of stuff. Ive got 3 cargo boxes. 1) is vehicle maintance and full change of fluids 2) Recovery gear with shovel, compressor, etc 3) survival/camping type stuff, box is self contained with food, shelter, fire starting, water purifing, etc.

I just tow a spare K5 behind me everywhere I go - for parts.

Seriously, though - this is kind of a catch-22 because the less junk you load your rig down with, the less likely it is to break. So it's always a compromise.

I like the list above, it is very complete and I planned on carrying most of it but I never thought of an alternator thats a great idea. I'm not wanting to haul a whole spare K5 with me and with the wife and kids in the rig with me space is limited. The basics are essential, but having everything isn't always needed. I don't beleive that a complete repair needs to be done on the trail just a good enough one to get you back to the trailhead (trailer) of course expedition type trips would need more survival type items. I also never wheel alone so between me and a buddy we can share the load:thumb:

You guys have some good ideas I've revised the list to fit my needs and to fit the purpose of being able to make it back to the trailer.

Keep em coming:popcorn:

Here is the thing about carrying spares. Everything adds weight. I do carry alot of spares with me but I leave the vast majority of them at the tow rig. Unless I am going somewhere that is going to be an overnight thing.

If I carried everything I do for an overnight stay all the time it would probably add 500 lbs to the weight of my truck.

So I actually load the truck different every time I go.

a 38" groundhawg all drywrottid ta hell, but i bets it gets me home:pimp:

ahh u too??? well we could share spares if needed.. well actually not really.. i got 4 x 40" hawgs on my truck.. and a dryrotten to hell 40" hawg spare...

now a 40" hawg is truely 39" but on a 12" rim is 38.8" so 38.... guess we could be trail spare buddies!!!!!!!!!!:woot:

yea its phunny cuz i actually pickt up my 40" swampers in lawrencevill?? new jersey, if i remember correctly, last year. prolly next to you? so yea i kept my "best" hawg for a spare, and its still in rough shape:haha:

I ass-u-me these lists are things taken on the trip, which are left at camp/trail head and not loaded in the rig taken out on the trail?

While great to have a spare everything, I couldn't imagine all this stuff in rig with me.

I carry most of this in my K5. Spare driveshafts are really the only spare parts besides belts, hub parts, U-joints etc. Mostly tools, recovery, survival, stuff to at least get me off the trail.

Old picture, but most of it fit nicely in the blue rubbermaid tub. It eventually cracked so I have a steel 36x12x12 box and three large ammo cans now. All strapped down where my back seat should be and the tire sits behind that. I strap the highlift and driveshafts on top of the tire.

Only thing I need to add to my list is spare 60 shafts, but they arent just being given away :doah:

Here you can kinda see how its organized in the back. I'm going to 45* the spare and move everything back some when I start on my cage.

What good is a spare part if it's at the trail head? You'd have to get a ride back and forth for everything which doesn't make sense and in many cases isn't possible.
With some creative packing and storage solutions it'll all fit. :D

Even with Martha Stewart as your creative organization, packing and storage solutions instructor carrying everything from Band-Aids to transmissions isn’t practical.
