Trailer brake controllers

Ok, as most of you on the site know, I have a 1980 K5 that I plan to use for towing a newer trailer. It is getting really close to the time for me to buy the new trailer, so I need to get a controller for the brakes. My old tent trailer had no brakes.

I have been looking at the Tekonsha Prodigy controller, and will probably go with it. However, what are other people using in their Blazers, and what are the pros/cons of the controllers? I thought about the P3, but most of the features would be wasted on the short wheelbase Blazer.

Here is my biggest concern, the trailers I am looking at are right at the upper limit for the Blazer to tow, meaning nearing 4500 GVWR. While I realize that is the max weight of the trailer, I want maximum control while towing. I plan to use a sway control/equalizer type hitch, but I still want to make sure my trailer brakes can be controlled should any sway or fishtailing develop while towing.

Since these trailers are between 22' and 25' with such a short wheel base tow vehicle, I want to make sure I can simply hit a button to apply a bit of trailer brake if a sway occurs. The Tekonsha stuff doesn't have the more conventional slide that I am used to seeing, so do they have just a button to apply brakes without hitting the brakes on the truck?

The place I typically tow my trailer to has a pretty steep and curvy downhill when leaving. This makes me very concerned about making sure I make my Blazer systems work well with a heavy long trailer like this.

Before anyone says it, I will not buy a pickup to tow. My Blazer is my tow vehicle, and that is not going to change. Besides the trucks from our generation cannot have all five of us in them, unless they are a crew cab with a 40 acre turning radius (no offense intended to any crew cab owners). I like the compact size of the Blazer, as well as the ability to haul my family, trailer, and all my gear, then go wheeling once the trailer is dropped. And, I grew up with my Dad having only a 74 F250 highboy, and we rode in the back under the shell, that doesn't seem very safe for my kids, so it is out of the question.

Sorry for such a long winded post, I just want the best that I can get.

I have the Tekonsha Voyager with the slide control and havent had any issues with it. I tow a 32' travel trailer with my 88 R10 Burb. My trailer with everything in it probably weighs about 5500 with about 1100 on the tongue and a weight distro hitch. With Kansas winds I still dont have big issues with sway.

I know I'm not running the same setup that you are describing, but I thought I'd give some experience with my controller. The Voyager would give you the ability to adjust on the fly for how much the brakes are applied as well as engaging the brakes manually at a variable rate. So when you are on the flats, you can turn down the power. But then when you get into the hills, just turn it up a bit to aid in controlling speed. I dont suggest using the trailer brakes alone for slowing or stopping as you'll burn them out in short order. But if a fishtail occurs, you can gradually apply the controller to steady the trailer.

Sorry I got londwinded as well, but hopefully this helps.:D

That's the kind of information I am looking for, I have plenty of experience towing, but it has always been with a truck. The Blazer is quite a bit different because of the short wheel base, so that is why I am asking.

I use the prodigy on my 2500 HD to pull my trailer .. I have a 20 ft flat bed 12k deck over trailer weighs about 2850 empty and about 8900 with the blazer and tools. The prodigy worked very well it has a manual lever on the bottom of the unit. It is set up witha scroll wheel to set brake bias voltage (lock up at 25 mph then back off a touch) Then has 3 boost settings for load weight. but again yes it does have a manual lever.

Man, that's what I was gonna say, except I tow a 32' 5th wheel toyhauler or an 18' 10k cartrailer. Great adjustability with the Prodigy, and the manual control is there, it's just underneath the unit. I would highly recommend the Prodigy controller.:D

Great thanks for the information guys. Do you think either of you could get a shot of the bottom of the unit? I want to mount it up in the top right vent of the dash. So I need to see how much room I need to create to make sure I can still work that lever.

I like the idea of having it up there so it can't get bumped, as well as the display is clearly visible while driving.

Guess a Prodigy it is, now just to get it ordered. Locally they want $120 for it, online I can get it for about $90, and with shipping it will still be cheaper.

I have a Tekonsha Prodigy as well, and it makes towing easy. The install was pretty straightforward, and the results were excellent. I'd highly recommend one.

Thank you sir! Those dimensions help a lot in visualizing, and I have my Blazer here tonight. May take a bit of custom work to get a place for the bracket to mount, but it should fill the vent hole really well.

While on the subject, i have and old one....Tekonsha i think. I can dig it up this weekend if someone is interested in playing with/trying it out for rare tows. I have never towed anything with electric brakes, and wanted it the F off of my lower dash. I am a surge brake boat tower. Hit me up if you want it for shipping +beer $.

Camping World has the Prodigy on sale this week for $99.99 for members. Just thought I'd throw it out there in case anybody is shopping.:D
