i have an oppertunity to buy a solid fruehaf car hauler, but i have a question-its setup for a pintel hook tow. would i be best off getting a pintle hook for my receiver tube or take the pintal hook off the trailer & replace it w/some type of ball mount, like a bulldog hitch? here is trailer.i know its overkill w/3 axles, but for the same $ i'm finding crappy trailers, this 1 seems like a good deal except that dang hitch! what ya'll think?

Just run the Pintle, its way strong. A little loud, doesn't look too hard to change to a conventional hitch either

I wouldn't worry about that at all that trailer is going to be HEAVY thats what I would worry about is how to lighten the dang thing up some

I'd cut off the rear axle... Way less scrub and then you gain two spares and lose some weight... Make another trailer for hauling garbage with the other axle or sell it... Keep it for spare parts, whatever...

If you stay with the pintle on the trailer, you can get a ball that has the clasp to pull a pintle...

I like the beaver tail, not sure about those ramps though...

Holy cow that trailer looks heavy. Don't worry about getting a pintle hitch. It will cut down on the people borrowing the trailer

Make sure you check the axles and brakes real well. That what can get spendy on used trailers.

I think dirtygoat's suggestion is spot on. Remvove the rear axle and find ways to lighten it up a bit. Of course that all depends on what you're towing with.

A friend of mine bought one of these a while back and he left it at my place to use when I need to.
I was using it behind my 350 powered crew cab, I thought it was going to be very heavy but it pulled it just fine with whatever I put on it.
We even piled it with scrap and junk to take to the dump and it never put too much weight on my hitch and never swayed from being tail heavy.
The secret is the triple axle.
If you remove one, you will reduce the stability of the design.
I will however repeat that you need to check the brakes on it, mine had bad brakes.

Those look like mobile home wheels... If so, you can get them with a massive load rating... I'd still lose the rear axle...

I tow a lot for work and really like the pintle setup. Easier to back and hook up as there is more room for forgiveness than a standard ball hitch. As mentioned before, get the pintle that is a 2" or 2 5/16' ball pintle combo. I'd leave the third axle. If you were to get into an accident an even crappy lawyer could say that your trailer was seriously modified and was a major factor in contributing to the accident. Just my opinion.

What are you planning on pulling it with? We have an almost identical trailer at my work, we use it to pull our backhoe behind our dual axle dumptruck. Check the tag up in the tongue area(if it's still intact), it should give you it's lightweight... I wouldn't even dream of pulling it behind anything smaller, it's a bit of overkill for a car hauler. Check the spring mounts for cracks, we have had to do extensive repair on ours. These things were typically workhorses, and used and abused as such, we don't typically sell these type of things until they are worn out, so be careful.

thanks for the comments guys. i'm going to go look at it this weekend. i will check everything ya'll noted out. it will be towed behind a 87 CC srw w/454 th400 & occasionally behind my 96 tahoe. they are asking $1400 for that trailer pictured. i was interested in it incase i ever wanted to haul a backhoe or my bush hog & ford tractor. for the same amount of money and more, i'm finding cheap woodfloor standard 16' trailers. i was thinking i should buy the heaviest(load wise) trailer i could afford, to cover any heavy loads i may need to tow in the future.

i also have found a regular 16' tandem axle trailer that has a diamond plate metal deck for $300. it has that 12-18'' high angle iron railing down the sides & across the front, which i don't like on car trailers, but i could live w/it for $300, i may could even cut that railing off, i'm not sure how much strength that rail adds to the trailer, if any at all.

i mainly need this trailer for hauling home the old vehicles/engines i have bought & occasionally hauling my scrap bin to the salvage yard. the $300 trailer would probally haul all i'll ever need it too, but i'm wondering how much i would wind up regretting not spending the extra $1100 & buying the heavier duty trailer. or get the cheaper trailer & use that extra cash to put new tires & a winch on that $300 trailer & use the snot out of it. i like the idea of a winch...alot, i about killed myself loading my m-37 on a friends trailer w/a come-along..that was a work out! and then later on, IF needed, buy a heavier trailer.

The triple axle trailer will haul the backhoe but your 1 tone probably won't. That yellow trailer pictured looks like it weights around 4500 lbs. That plus a 14K lb hoe and extra buckets you are asking for trouble. Not to mention, your tahoe would pull the yellow trailer but with only minimal load on the deck.

BTW, that yellow trailer looks like it needs a lot of work.
