Hey guys, I'm in the market for a car hauler, and need help deciding what size I need. It'll mostly be used to haul a K5 with a BBC, on 1 tons and 40s...and also to pick up the occasional project/parts cars or trucks, that may be long wheelbase. Tow vehicle, for now, is a 2012 Silverado 1500 crew cab 4x4, with a 6.2L, and I THINK 6L80(it's a 6 speed). I'm thinking a 20 foot...but dont know if I can get by with 3500lb axles, or if I really need to step up to 5200lbs....I think I know the answer, but just trying to verify with folks with more experience. It's a pretty decent price difference between the two, and 3500s are a lot more common. Will the bigger axle trailer be much heavier...too much for a 1/2 ton? Also, any recommendations on steel vs wood deck? Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Don't forget drive over fenders
10 k trailer . . 10 ply tires on it .6lug axles prefered if me . 20ft non hinge ramps so long stuff can hang off the tail . Build your own fenders or plan on destroying factorytin ones . Just go 102 wide overall now . Lots of tie down points MUST or get a 12pack of 5/8in weld on d-rings .
Do NOT be afraid to crawl all over the trailer and under it and check its quality . Pop out rubber mount lights and check electric connections.
Most new ones i have seen SUCK for how much they sell them for .

My vote is either 5200# or (preferably) 7000# axles with drive over fenders, trailers are too expensive to realize it’s undersized after the fact.
I have an 18’ (82” wide) Big Tex with 7k axles (8 lug) and driver over fenders for my Blazer (see signature), it hauls it great.
Mine is probably overkill but I’ve borrowed a light duty trailer with 3500# axles for my old K10 with 44’s, that was a scary haul. That trailer was squatted really bad, the tires rubbed the fenders on bumps and the little 15” tires looked like they would pop at any time.

I had a 10k pj buggy hauler, 102" wide, drive over fenders and both axles had brakes.
I would look for brakes on both, hauling with a 1/2 ton truck.

I looked at at pj buggy hauler once. Did not like how far back the fenders were.
I have a Buggy Hauler and I love it. 10K, drive over fenders, the only thing is it's heavy. I think its 2500 empty, but it fits my K5 with 40's and one tons no problem. I tow it with a Tundra now, which admittedly is a little on the smaller side, but just take your time and you will be fine.
My 10k, 20 ft trailer is 3250 empty. But it is considered an equipment trailer.
My Big Tex is like that, it’s a “12ET” equipment trailer and is 28xx lbs empty. With the Blazer on the trailer that pile is FAT.

I hadn't really thought about that. I was really hoping to find a decent used one, and pretty much all I've seen are 83"....hell, I'm having a hard time even just finding used 10k trailers, in general. For comparison...do you have any idea what standard 20 foot, or even an 18 foot, 7k car hauler weighs, empty? Is a 10k trailer really that much HEAVIER?
You dont want a 7k . . Just go 10k .
