hey guys hows it going. this week iam planning to change all the fluids in my 87 jimmy. when i change the tranny fluid iam not sure whats the best way to get all of it out. i drain what ever is in the pan but iam not sure how to get what evers left in the toruqe converter. i heard that you hook up a hose to the pressure side of the trans cooler start the truck and let it pump out as you pour new atf in. i am sure that i dont have a tranny cooler, could be wrong. can take pics if wanted just let me know. thanks alot.

You take it to a shop that has a special machine that gets hooked into one of the trans lines and then kinda does as you say, old fluid comes out as new fluid gets pumped back in. I would change the filter after having this done though (will cost you another several quarts of fluid but worth it in the end).

FYI, the convertor holds about 9 quarts of fluid.

thanks, i was asking because i wanted to do it my self and not take it to a shop. i like doing things my self cause i can take as much time as i want, and i know that iam doing it right. its cheap too. but there is no way i could get all the fluid out my self? is there a cheap type of pump i could make or buy?

See if you can find a BG shop that uses the BG machine. Its not a positive replacement system so it doesn't increase the pressure on the system.

this is the machine i used for years. works great and never had any problems.

and what color is your fluid now ?

this will let us help you in the right direction of how to mait. your tranny. if black you dont want to change it all at once.

also go to your local parts store and get one of these for install when you have the pan down. this will greatly help in the next service job you will do later.

do a redneck flush... unhook trans lines from radiator, get some clean hose extensions a couple feet.. you will need an empty 5 gal bucket and a 5 gallon bucket of new trans fluid.. put the return cooler line from the trans in the new bucket of fluid and the other line in the empty bucket. start engine and watch the empty bucket, when the fluid changes from dirty to clean turn of engine .. the trans pump will suck new fluid into trans and cycle out the old trans fluid..change trans filter and gasket before or after this is done... i change mine after everything,,,

i would also flush radiator trans cooler if fluid is real bad.. i flush my trans every other year and service filter every year.. the darker the fluid then the more fluid i would get out of it...JMHO

hey thanks for all the replies. as for the color of the atf its a dark red. i was messing around in some mud one day and as i was driveing back home my transfer case threw up all over my exhaust. i could see the atf coming out of the breather on top. as for changeing my tranny fluid iam gonna go with what J.R. said. if any one else has any tips let me know thanks.

after you get your fluid and filter changed and all new fluid in it i would add an additive.. i use lube guard, its a red bottle can get it at oriellys and other stores....if your fluid was burnt that means you have an internal problem already but new fluid and this additive can get more miles out of it before a rebuild is needed.. if the old fluid was real bad i would use 2 bottles... this stuff does work to a point, it wont revive a dead trans but it will do wonders in getting an old trans to go further...JMHO

Just an added tid bit

Wile your flushing (Like JR mentioned :waytogo: )

Once your done, change the filter in the pan one last time then add a spin on oil filter in the return line from the cooler.

This type of filter (regular engine oil remote is fine) will catch a lot of crap that comes from the converter and back to the tranny.

Change that new filter every engine oil change and then add necessary fluid to top off.

Auto trannies make loads of crud. You can see this in the pan. Its a thin gray soot like material.

Mostly its fine metal particles and materials from the friction parts (clutches, bands etc)

The filter in the pan is little more than a CLOD sifter.

The trannies dont like this junk, especially the valve body.

The 700R4 is really succeptable to issues when the fluid becomes contaminated with crap.

The torque converter is a major source or crap too.

Small amounts of flexing and wear in the turbine and pump blades makes lots of this sooty fine metal junk.

The add on filter will clean that stuff right up.

If you dont already have an oil to air cooler, get one.

I prefer to block off the radiator cooler and use the air to oil cooler totally.

The only issue would be if you operate in severe cold climates in the winter.

Fluid that stays too cold can cause some issues too, but not as much as too much heat..

Have fun :waytogo:
