Antother vote for standard mercon/dexron. Of course change the filter.
Synthetic will help keep the heat down, but unless you flush all the old stuff out its not worth it at all.
As far as the only beneit of synthetic being it runs a bit cooler , im not really sure im with yall on that one. Just get a few drops of synthetic fluid between your fingers and notice how well it sticks and feels way slimier. Try it again with standard fluid, it will not feel the same.
If i had to speculate id say synthetic would actually keep the planetary assemblies,and bearings lubed a bit better .(lower fluid temp being a side effect of less friction)
The other consideration is basic fluid is about$1-$3 a quart. Synthetic ranges $5-$12 a quart. If for some reason you sprung a leak and had to fill it back up after repair itd be more cost effective to add a $2 quart instead of a $12 quart that may not be available at your average roadside gas station. Additionally if you had synthetic flushed in and had to repair a leak and refill it , youd be kicking your own ass adding standard fluid to it.
