On a 2wd TH400, should there be any play in the output yoke? (fixed, not slip)
I'm trying to find a strange noise in the driveline. After taking the prop shaft off I noticed I could move the yoke up and down a bit. More than I would've thought was acceptable. Does the yoke run in a bearing or just slide over the output shaft and bolt up?

there shouldnt be any play in that yoke. the yoke slips over the shaft. the shaft should be mounted on a bearing, but to answer the question, that shouldnt move up and down. time for something to get rebuilt.

You must have a truck or vette TH400 if it has a bolt on yoke. To answer your question, there will be some movement as the yoke slips onto the output shaft but at the same time is being supported by a bushing, not a bearing. If there is excesssive play the bushing may be bad.

OK thanks. I've got a 'grinding' noise as I start pulling away. Quite loud but but not so noticeable once you get above 15-20 mph.(this started happening on Sunday so it's a new 'developing' fault!) Pulling away gently it sounds really course, then changes pitch when it drops into second but is still there. I thought at first it was the pinion bearings but the diff is all rebuilt and laying under the car when it's on stands, with it idling in first, it seems to be louder in the trans than the diff but it's hard to tell with the noise travelling along the propshaft. I'll run it later, now that the prop is off, and see if it's still there but I've got a feeling that with the prop off there won't be enough load on the trans to make it noisey.
Can the tailhousing be taken off in situ and the bush replaced?

Why can't things just work?!!!!!

Yes once you unbolt the yoke the tail housing can be removed and the bushing inspected and replaced.
