So I am building an all around crawler/4x4. My plans are a mild built chevy 350, but am looking for the best options for my Tranny and Transfer Case.

I need an automatic transmission (it is my wifes crawler) and something that gives a really good lower gear option while still cruising 75 down high way with 38" tires. For now axles will be geared 4.10 and tires size will be 36" maybe 38". I know I want lower gears etc. But it is not in the budget now.

I am leaning towards the 700r4 or the 400 or the 350... I just want all around performance. Also what transfer case set up? I have a dana 300 that can adapt, but novak wants $550 for adapter. I can re-gear it lower etc. I can not afford an atlas and length is an issue as it will be going into a CJ7... Thanks for input.

TH350 is the shortest transmission option, they will mate to a 300 or you could look around and find a Lomax case, 205 with a 3:1 low gear.

If it were me I would do a reverse manual valve body, and put some of the goodies that Jimmey's 4x4 in Cortez is getting made for them in. Thing to remember about a manual valve body is they pull full line pressure shifts all the time. Not entirely street able but I have learned to drive around that issue.
