tranny identification

hey im thinking of goin to the junkyard and getting a sm456 or a new t-case preferebly a np205, anyone know any distinguishing marks, obviously w/ the tranny theres a clutch etc.

It's been a while since I've looked at mine but I'm almost sure the numbers "465" are cast in the side of the tranny. Most transfer cases have an ID tag that is round on the backside of them...usually buried in dirt and grease. The 205 will have an aluminum cover with 6 bolts on the back and is fairly compact. In some respects the 203 looks similar except it is bigger, but both are cast iron. The 208 and 241 are aluminum housing chain drive T-cases.

look at the link for frankentruck pics on my link below, since I just shot an underside picture of an SM465/NP205 combo. It isn't the best pic, but you can see both are iron cases. You will HAVE to get a 4wd Sm465, so be leery of the 2WD ones which you will undoubtedly find many more of. The SM465 uses no external linkage, the shifter handle goes straight through the top of the transfer case.
